So with Olympics coming up, there are several of our Leafs in the mix.

Matthews a given for USA
Marner a possibility/likely for Canada (should be, on that big ice)
Reilly is also in the mix for Canada
Tavares likely a long shot
Apparently Nylander NOT on Swedens list (not sure why, maybe because born in Canada, but played for sweden before)
Goalies are deep, but could soooooup make the mix?

Anyway, it got me thinking that a tournament like this could get their "killer instinct" kicked up a notch? Every game is huge, and for Marner having guys like Crosby etc in the room under pressure can only help right? Looking at USA not ALOT of veterans, but that atmosphere has to crank Matty up too right?

Maybe grasping at straws here a bit due to our recent struggles in the first round, but I am HOPEFUL that the change of pace with a group of very good players will rub off and help us in the long run.

Maybe?

The way Tavares was playing before he went down, he definitely should be in the mix. Hopefully this injury doesn't screw him.

Also re: Nylander, I believe he wasn't at that camp or whatever cause he wasn't fully vaccinated at the time. At least I think that's what the issue was. Sweden would be absolutely idiotic to leave Nylander off the roster with how he's performed for them in international play over the years plus how he has played in general over the past year or so.

Kase and Kampf are likely, as is Mrazek.

USA goalies are interesting. https://www.quanthockey.com/nhl/nationality/active-american-nhl-goalies-career-

Helly starter but after him. Gibson probably there, he's off to a hot start and he's got a track record. Demko I'd think goes. Could also see them taking Knight over 1 of those guys. I though Campbell might have a chance but I'm thinking it's between those 4 at this point. And you still have guys like Quick, Petersen, and Nedeljkovic.

Yeah Nylander is a strange one. I found the article below and there is no way he doesn't make that list. This was dated Aug 4th so who knows...

Though a formal decision has not yet been made on NHL participation in the 2022 Winter Olympics, it appears as though teams have already begun to plan as though the players will receive the green light to participate.

With approximately 6 months remaining until the Olympic Games in Beijing are scheduled to open on February 4th, countries have already begun to discuss roster options.

According to a Swedish report, Sweden is scheduled to have a meeting next week in Stockholm to prepare for the upcoming Olympic games and as many as 27 NHL players have been invited. There was, however, one very notable absence. Toronto Maple Leafs forward William Nylander.

Thus far, the players who were invited are as follows:

Goalies: Jacob Markström (CGY) Linus Ullmark (BOS)

Defensemen: Jonas Brodin (MIN), Rasmus Dahlin (BUF), Mattias Ekholm (NSH), Oliver Ekman-Larsson (VAN), Erik Gustafsson (MON), Victor Hedman (TBL), John Klingberg (DAL), Hampus Lindholm (ANA).

Forwards: Mikael Backlund (CGY), André Burakovsky (COL), Nicklas Bäckström (WSH), Joel Eriksson Ek (MIN), Jesper Fast (CAR), Filip Forsberg (NSH), Carl Hagelin (WSH), Patric Hörnqvist (FLA), Mattias Janmark (VGK), Calle Järnkrok (SEA), William Karlsson (VGK), Gabriel Landeskog (COL), Elias Lindholm (CGY), Elias Pettersson (VAN), Jakob Silfverberg (ANA), Alexander Wennberg (SEA) and Mika Zibanejad (NYR).

Obviously, it goes without saying that Nylander is a higher quality offensive player than several of the names on this list, which begs the question; why was Nylander left off of this list of invitees?

Perhaps it's something as simple as a conflicting schedule or some sort of an Olympic eligibility rule (Nylander was born in Calgary, Alberta). Is it possible that Sweden simply doesn't view Nylander as the type of player that the team can win with? That one seems pretty farfetched, considering the fact that Nylander is a 30-goal scorer in the best league in the world and has an excellent track record with Sweden in IIHF events.

It will be intriguing to hear the rationale behind the decision once all of the details come out.

Canada Forwards purely by PPG

I don’t think it’s on big ice.

Yeah I kinda have a feeling that McJesus is going to go crazy and take over the world.

Most people dont have Tavares on the Canada roster but he's the Roots Olympic spokes person in the ads, I'd say they made sure to get a roster player or else it's pretty awkward and makes no sense

Marner(CAN) vs Matthews (USA) vs nylander(SWE) is going to be really fun. Good chance a Leaf player leaves Beijing with a gold medal.

I'd LOVE a Canada vs USA final for McDavid vs Matthews and Canada bringing the gold home, Marner, Tavares and Rielly holding their medals over Matty lol.

But beating Russia would be great to after that B.S in the last Olympics and them ruining our streak of medals. I will never forgive you for that Bettman.

Obviously rooting for Canada first but if Canada doesn't succeed I hope Matthews and Nylander have great tournaments and lead their respective countries to success.
AM and WN won't prevent me from rooting against USA and Sweden. Always hated their hockey teams ;-)

Nylander was already in Canada not fully vaccinated
First line for Sweden for fun

Can't wait for this. It's gonna be so much fun.

It'll also be interesting to see which players come out of the Olympics hot, and propel their team on a run once play resumes. Case can also be made about injuries too.

I know the players are excited too, Olympics is big boy time. They will lay it all out and some players might even learn how to further enhance their game playing in this kind of tournament.

It would be good for all Leafs to go and get some exposure to other elite players and get a feel for winning. Obviously not all of them will win but pick up whatever good habits and get a feeling for success in big game situations will be nice. Think of it as the WJCs for grown men.
