There's 2 things that are certain in life

-Great players always feast on the Leafs

-Any former Leaf will burn his old team & get the win

Is it possible that Soup's performance earlier in the season masked the warts we have on D or is it all on the goaltenders ???

Leafs rank 7th in goals against per game and 6th in goals against per 60min, and overall on the year their goaltending at this point has been perfectly mediocre.

Yep, I don't know how many times this needs to be told but GAA is a team stat, SV% is an individual stat.

Being outscored 8-4 the last two games is the absurd numbers. 8 goals against on 50 shots !!!

Maybe the problem isn't number of shots we take, maybe its about the quality and quantity of shots the Leafs surrender? :help:

Something else to take into account is that this is happening with the Leafs having their full and healthy roster available to dress, so player personnel wise this is as good as it gets.

If 8 goals every 50 shots is the real quality of the Leafs defense....why didn't it happen for the previous 40 odd games?

The problem with our current losses is 75%+ on goaltending which has been shit since about ~December.

Not sure what you are alluding to. My point is that in November when Holl falls down and gives up a breakaway, Soup makes the save. In February when Holl falls down and gives up a breakaway, and Soup does not make the save, therein lies the difference.

Holl was on the ice for many more goals against in OCT/NOV than he has been in JAN/FEB.

 ......the one constant this season.

I get it, but my guess is Soup was saving his ass some then. He isn't saving anybody's now because his game has come down to earth.

well sort of true, though his game has gone down well below earth lately to be honest.

He really wasn't saving anyone's ass earlier though, either.

Pre-covid break: 30gms, 2.70xga/60 (#6), 2.47ga/60 (#4), 91.96sv% (#3)
Post-covid break: 15gms, 2.47xga/60 (#2), 3.01ga/60 (#18), 89.11sv% (#25)

so it doesn't look like he was saving the defense much even back then - the defense was very good, and the goaltending was very good.

the goaltending certainly does seem to be sabotaging the defense lately, though.......but as you can see, the defense is still actually performing very well, arguably even better than before.

Whats weird is how different the facts are from the narratives with Holl since January. I figure many of the guys being hard on him would be doing so because lots of goals have been going in on him but....

Since January 1st:

Lowest Goals Against/60 5v5:
1. Holl: 2.2
2. Dermott : 2.95
3. Sandin: 2.95
4. Brodie: 3.34
5. Rielly: 3.4
6. Liljegren: 3.57
7. Muzzin: 4.38

Holls stats:
CF%: 57.15
SF%: 55.82
SCF%: 64.00
HDCF%: 68.92
xGF%: 63.27
GF%: 59.48

That just doesnt look that bad to me.

Has the legs, has the will, but just not a top 6 player. Doesn't have the offensive instinct. Still a very good player

Hoping we can come back with Jamie and Penny Oleksiak from our trip
Leafs could use one, I could use the other

Too bad he has a NTC, would be a great addition...although 4.6 cap hit is kind of hard to fit it

It is not even the numbers. It is the eye test too. Leafs fans just have a terrible eye test apparently.

Holl is getting torn apart for this. Sure, I would have liked him to swipe the puck away at some point so you break up the chance. Do you know what I also would have liked? Holl not having to worry about two (or even three) guys when it is not even an odd-man rush chance; Bunting to take more than one stride from the opposing blue line in that entire sequence, because he was covering nobody on that backcheck and could have easily covered the goal scorer; Matthews to not puck-watch and instead tie up the guy who was not covered rather than the guy who was.

Any of those things happen, or Holl swiping the puck away, and that is likely not a goal. But that is 4 separate defensive errors, 3 of which had nothing to even do with Holl at all (and the one that involved Holl was probably the least egregious), that led to that goal against. Plus Mrazek missing his poke check, so you can count that as 5.

I don't think the problem was entirely with how Holl defended the rush, but how he caused it by having an incredibly egregious turnover.
That said, people are definitely unreasonably harsh with Holl. Especially with how good he looked with Sandin, and how much Muzzin has struggled this year. It's not fair to only blame Holl, but overlook Muzzin's issues and Keefe for continuing to play them despite their struggles

Muzzin/Holl struggled early (mostly on Holl and he came back great from being benched) and Muzzin has struggled coming back from his concussion (not that uncommon and give him time) but for the games in between:

QoC: Shutdown
Ozone faceoff%: 42%
xGF%: 55.43
GF%: 57.35
