Incidentally, this is very definitely not a rumor. Trevor Connors, whom the OP is citing as the "source", has an article claiming it came from Maple Leafs Daily. Maple Leafs Daily, in return, in their own article, say that this came from... PuckPedia's answer to Armchair GM.
The last sentence in the Maple Leafs Daily article starts with "Obviously, this isn't a trade that we expect to happen, nor has Laine been linked to the Maple Leafs in any way". (It then goes on to suggest the Leafs are losing the trade.)
So yeah, we make a lot of jokes about "rumors" coming from posts here on TR&FA or from Armchair GM, but this is actually exactly that.

While I hope Laine reaches his potential, he’s not a guy I would bet assets on doing so.
How do you see the salary cup? Besides, I sincerely doubt Toronto needs Laine and Columbus needs any of those players. But I have to give you credit for trying to get a fair deal.

It was also mentioned on Heavy on NHL, by Cole Shelton. If you don’t know what a rumor is, it is a circulating story or report of uncertain or doubtful truth. So yes it is a rumor.
I think the Jackets get more if they're retaining Laine down to $4.35m x 2. That's an incredible contract. And the 3 contracts coming from Toronto is negative value to Columbus.
So you think something made up by fans is a real rumor that should be treated with the same gravity as, say, a rumor being hinted by actual insiders and hockey reporters? No, this is not a real rumor. This sources from an armchair GM by a fan, even if some guy who talks about MMA on a wordpress site is involved.
Including the first gets Columbus to take your cap dumps and disgruntled miniature glass winger, but it doesn't get you nine million in retention or Laine's services.

It would have to come from a valid source though. This sounds like something made up and then repeated by someone else, no different than any of the whacky proposals we see here.

So... Columbus not only takes on two players with 2 or 3 years remaining on their deals, and do not offer any upgrade or potential addition to the future core, as well as another RFA wing that wouldn't make the team and give up the best asset and potentially a less than 15 spot draft position exchange. Sounds great. Sign us up. I mean makes total sense and exactly what CBJ would be looking to do.

Laine is coming out of the players assistance program, in order to come out of the players assistance program, you need to go in to the players assistance program.
Once you go into the players assistance program you are damaged goods until you prove otherwise.
I wouldn't want Laine right now, unless Laine came dirt cheap, the deal would have to be so good I couldn't turn it down, there is no way in hell I'd move a 1st rounder for Laine right now.
I'd take him because he is talented but it would be TAKING him.

Than Leafs aggragate should not have posted it titled RUMOR should they? Got talk to them. Who really cares man, read it if you agree state why, if you don’t state why. More posts in here crying if it is a rumor or not, who the hell cares! I just put it out there for people to read. No wonder so many older posters quit posting in here.
