It doesn't really say anything, since putting our PPG center on the 3rd line is pretty obviously a bad move.
Maybe not to you but a 2C who is 40th in the league in scoring while playing on the best PP in the league doesn’t warrant $11M AAV. He’s poor defensively and one of the slowest skaters in the league. He’s at best a $7M player and that’s only because of his faceoff ability and his play below the dots in the offensive zone. Nothing the Leafs can do though. They’re stuck with his contract as he continues to regress. Signing looked good at the time but it didn’t allow them to build a cup contender defense or enough forward depth.

Dubas basically traded a conditional 3rd in 2023 or a 2nd in 2025 for Lyubushkin. That’s not a terrible move.
what REALY happened is that Dubas took four swings at the plate, and hit homers with Bunting, Kase and Kampf, and whiffed on Ritchie.
He effectively fixed the Ritchie whiff at no cost, because the pick for Lyubushkin is worth it.
But some posters here are like lots of people you know, they exclude every fact and context and zoom in on something that they criticize.
Anyways, thank god we no longer have that dolt Lou running the team.

Great asset management, overpay a fringe player and than trade a pick to dump his salary.
Lyubushkin alone was likely going to fetch a 2nd or 3rd. Big bodied, RHD, on a cheap expiring contract coming up to the Trade Deadline. The fact we got them to take on Ritchie @ 2.5mil with an extra year to go is laughable. This was a shrewd move by Dubas

Dube gave the pick so they'd take Ritchie , Lybushkin is a Hutton level D

so basically instead of giving up a 5th like we did for Hutton it was upgraded to a 2nd or 3rd and we also took some cash back in Dzingle
The 23 hits Hutton has compared to Lyubushkin’s 94 is definitely on the same level for sure. Forget level D, level F…

About time we get a physical presence back there who can bring that intimidation factor since Muzzin has lost that from his game. I just wonder what this means for the D pairings. Does he play with Rielly and Brodie with Muzzin now? Or does Liljegren get moved to the press box since I don't see them doing that to Sandin.

I don't know much about him so I'll take your word for it :)

He seems to be really solid defensively.

Dubas said interestingly today he will battle with the rest of the d men for a spot. Seems like he isn't a permanent fixture on the blueline

Did you expect Dubas to say Dermott or Liljegren are now out of the lineup?

The fact that Dubas said Lyubushkin brings an element that our other defenceman don’t says it all. He’ll be in the lineup.

Easily would have fetched a 3rd for a playoff team as insurance, bottom-pair. My first choice would have been Oleksiak but I’m pleased with giving a low risk shot to Lyu.

Now let’s try to snag a Lehkonen or similar player for defensive shut downs

7 mill doesn't get you nearly as much as you think it does these days. He is still easily worth north of 9 mill, and that is with a 2022 where his line has not been able to put the puck in the net nearly as often as they are capable of doing.

Defensively, he is far from poor, but he has never been a great defensive player. He has always been generally and consistently mediocre. The main thing that is plaguing him is the same thing that is plaguing almost everyone on this team right now, and that is shotty goaltending.

His main value is producing offense, and he has consistently been among the league leaders at center this year when it comes to generating offensive chances. He and Nylander just need to start putting them in like they were in 2021.

The Leafs already have an entire 3rd line full of guys like Lehkonen, except better.

I think you meant he went dumpster diving and some of these guys have played ok. Let me know when he fixes this porous defence.

Porous defence??? Last i checked Leafs were still one of the stingier teams in the league while tied for 6th overall with games in hand on everyone?

So with dzingel waived we have clarity now.

The trade is essentially a 3rd for Lyubushkin. That may or may not be an overpay. He's definitely better than Hutton, who we gave up a 5th for last year, and I imagine there were other teams interested in him too. I guess his true value would be maybe a 4th rounder, but then again if a borderline playoffs team was trading a 4th rounder for him that would beat out 4th rounder so we'd have to add.

Anyways it's a slight overpay for Lyubushkin straight up, but maybe only one round higher than value, and that slight overpay is the cost of dumping ritchie's contract.
It’s more than that. It’s a draft pick for a physical RD and getting rid of Ritchie’s contract for next season too.

To me Lyubushkin is their #8 but brings what they lack & lacks what they already have a lot of (mobile puck moving D-men).

Leafs have great personnel to compete for bottom 3 minutes & matchups.
