Apparently Ritchie was loafing it on the Marlies last night .. Can't imagine how he'll react after being traded to Arizona and having to play this year and next there.

Man he wasted a big opportunity here. Kinda impressed Dubas showed him the door so quickly after not performing, considering he was a hometown boy and all.

I like this from Dubas. If you are not contributing to the team then you are taking space and capspace away; you are not going to be a Leaf long.

Savage move but had to be done!

He has played 2C in his career; it isn't like he would be asked to do something that he hasn't done before. Also, Dzingel is fast; the dude can skate and keep up with Kerfoot/Willy unlike Tavares
if he was still anywhere near that player why do you believe the Yotes couldn't get more than just throwing him in this deal ?

this trade works for us by just dumping Ritchie's cap hit for next year even though we had to give up the pick , the 2 guys we picked up are probably just fillers in case we run into injuries/covid

Gotta love the hubris.
"I CAN'T POSSIBLY be wrong about Ritchie needing a lot of value to dump, therefore a player I've never seen is worthless."

For those paying attention- Armstrong has straight up said that they were in on Ritchie this summer.

They didn't pick up Ritchie when he was available for free though.

Now that we have Dzingel honestly I'd go something like this

Bunting-Matthews-Marner
Kerfoot-Dzingel-Nylander
Mikheyev-Tavares-Kase
Engvall-Kampf-Spezza
Simmonds

Rielly Brodie
Sandin Lyubushkin
Muzzin Liljegren
Dermott/Holl

Campbell
Mrazek

** Rotate forwards/Defensemen in and out of line up as we are set to play a lot of games in a short time in the upcoming months.

*spread out offense. You have to get more out of Tavares against 3rd pairing D-men and really low QoC where JT line should win competition on most nights.

*** Hope this plan works against Tampa/Florida

Dzingel can't play C and certainly can't play higher than our 4th line.

Totally agree. That lunch pale and hard hat approach to their game is exactly what we needed to spread throughout this Leafs team. A team who has consistently crumbled when the going gets tough. When they can't skill around, and another team starts coming in waves physically, we suddenly get on our heels and look like we're just hanging on. You know Bunting and Kase...even Kampf, aren't going to do that. Dzingel is another you can add to that mix imo. I personally dress him over Engvall. He has a bigger resume of being able to produce, and has shown he'll stick up for teammates and himself. Skates well, can PK, and can play C in a pinch although not ideal. He's an immediate upgrade on Engvall imo. You'd have to think Dzingel would love to find the right fit as he approaches 30, instead of switching sweaters all the time. Could be a really interesting add, and add to that Bunting & Kase type effort

This may not be popular with some, but for me, Engvall and/or even Mikheyev would be replaced if they can find the right replacements. Dzingel might already be one such player.

It appears that Keefe is high on Engvall and I can see why, beyond his familiarity with him (which is very important when making such decisions). Mik can create and had flashes of strong finish. Playoffs are a different animal and this is "we can't fail again" postseason of all postseasons and I see them as players who might be upgraded (Engvall mig.

I admire their defensive commitment, this is what has me torn because such team builds can win, it's just that usually such players with a bit more jam. Mik can kill penalties and is more valuable overall certainly, but still expendable.

Scoring gets tougher in the playoffs, so if you aren't scoring, what are you doing? Are you taking the body, making life difficult in the neutral zone, wearing down opponents?

If not, it is a tougher climb when you need all hands on deck.

Smart move by Dubas. He got rid of Ritchie's contract for a reasonable cost while adding 2 very decent depth players with a similar combined AAV.

Pretty much all deadline deals ever. Dzingels not much, but veteran depth forwards bring a mid-late round pick at the deadline. Big physical RHD than can play PK and handle matchup minutes bring something better. Some Arizona fans wanted a 2nd for Lyubushkin, others a little less.

We got both for a 3rd. We did not pay anything to dump Ritchie.
Dzingle is a waiver wire level player and Bush hopefully can give us some mins on the third pair in case of injuries and he probably had a Hutton type value , also i wouldn't put much stock in what there 5 fans say on this board , lol .

What is worse. Being traded to Arizona or Robidas Island?

Maybe Robidas Island is in Arizona.

Robidas Island is probably better. You get paid full value while don't have to put in the grind of workouts, skates and if team is shit like the yotes: feeling like crap because losing all the time

still feel there might be one more move in play. Probably Braun, then we have 8 dmen going into the playoffs. Or maybe they get a left hand Dman now

yeah I commented earlier saying I wonder if they still trade for one more top 4 Dman and then we see this.

Rielly Brodie
Muzzin ?
Sandin Lyub
Liljegren Holl

as our 8 playoff dman.

Is robidas even on robidas Island?
Can we change the name now?
Lost leafs land?
Land that fans forgot?
Brokeback Island?

Naw. If you get traded to Arizona, you get to hang out with the college crowd.
That’s fun.

However things work out for our two new Leafs, the real bonus was shedding Ritchie's contract. If either Dzingel or Lyubushkin fail I'm fairly certain Dubas could move both for something like a 6th and a 3rd. I'm really astounded that this got done,

Dzingel at this point profiles as a pretty useful utility winger.
Not bad depth in case someone gets hurt on the 3/4 lines, can probably hang with the top lines for a game or two here and there.

Nice to see Dubas admit defeat with Ritchie though im not sure if either of these guys will see much ice time barring injury.

Not terrible but paying to dump a UFA you signed the same seasons is never ideal.

We are not getting 40-point Dzingel. We are getting a much different player, one that is likely sent down before usurping a role on the Leafs.

the Leafs don't really rely on defensemen to create offense very much. He can do the bare minimum and keep plays alive

In the Leafs system, you need a good first pass on transition breakouts. All those guys could do was flip the puck out or ring it around the wall. That killed any offense as they were just trying to clear the zone any way possible.

Ritchie very recently cleared waivers , which means he had zero value around the league . I have no idea how much clearer you need his value to be explained to you .

I don’t think it’s that simple. You’ve probably got teams who were interested, but knowing the Leafs’ cap situation they were holding out to hopefully get an asset out of it.

Now that the Leafs are out of the equation I could see him moved for like a 7th. Don’t underestimate this league’s love for big guys.
