This is a fantastic trade lol. The Ritchie contract was DOA, but if Dubas can wheel and deal his way to a get out of jail free card, that's awesome. Two NHL bodies for a cap dump and a draft pick is outstanding.

I am both surprised and not surprised that Ritchie still had some value. He's awful, but he's been bamboozling GM's into money and minutes for years now, so what's one more? He'll get his chance on a bottom feeder, contenders are done with his nonsense.

Makes me think "if it is too good to be true, then it is not true". Other than signing the stiff, I can't see anything not to like about this trade. That is what scares me. What am I missing ??

So we have

Rielly
Brodie
Muzzin
Holl
Sandin
Lilly
Dermott
Lyubushkin

That is NHL quality they can't all play so who goes?
They say you need eight defencemen to make it through four rounds of the playoffs.

I don't know if that has any bearing here, but one could always hope.

What is Lybubushkin about? Is he a big man to clear men infront of the net, smooth skater?

I'm kind of hoping for a big angry Ruski who lays hits and is mobile enough to not get exposed on the counter, which happens quite often with the high volume of pinches that the Dmen and C go for in the offensive zone.

They were carrying 7D and 12F before the trade. If they want to accrue cap space for another trade before the deadline they need to drop one of the now 13 forwards.

they will drop lili as a paper transaction like they have been doing all year , they have only done it 100x already.:rolleyes: ........

what would be the point of getting dzingel if they would waive him right away ? they would have just done the ritchie+pick for lyb if they didnt want him in the first place. ..
Frankly, i see dzingel as this years gallchenuk, i expect him to get a decent shot in the lineup ..... hes got 1 month to impress and if he doesnt then they can trade/waive him at the deadline.

That’s exactly who he is. Some of us have mentioned him many times as a target.

Like Muzzin he's a guy that should make both the analytics and watch the games crowd happy about the trade. He's very [very] one dimensional, but he's shown to be well above average at that one dimension- defense.

My issue is that he's simply not an overall improvement on any one defenseman we have, and lack of puck skills may cause him to look awful (like Polak) in our system. Not to mention that if he's taking Tim out of the lineup we're getting worse.

your missing nothing since even if neither of the players can crack our lineup both their cap hits can be fully buried

on Zona's end they only have just over 30m in salaries for next year and they're not going to be competing so there's no downside to them buying a pick

the only concern i have is how weak is Bush if he couldn't get a 3rd on his own and they had to take Ritchie back to bump up the pick

Thoughts

A. Add me to the "called it" group. Called that Arizona was the perfect landing spot for Ritchie, and that Lyub was a good fit here. Only miss was that I thought that Larsson would be the forward we'd want. Maybe price too high?

B. Figuring that a Lyub + Dzingel combo is worth at least a 3rd + 6th, worst case is that Ritchie was neutral value. So much for an albatross that would cost a 1st to dump.

C. Don't get mad when Ritchie takes NHL minutes and gets traded for decent value next deadline.

D. Are we cap compliant or does something else have to give (waive Dzingel, sent down Liljegren)?

E. Love that pick is so time delayed.

All around excellent deal.

You had me at “Ritchie traded”….
Rielly-brodie
Muzzin-lyubushkin/holl
Sandin- lyubushkin/holl

Out
Dermott-liljegren

This is it in a nutshell IMO.

The only way I see this changing is if Dubas can find a sweetheart deal for an upgrade. This would more than likely require some cap absorption by a third team for a draft pick.

All GM's listen until they are absolutely certain that this is the best team they can settle on, or, the 12th hour is reached, so anything is possible. His awareness of how important such a player is, as he identified last year when he landed Bogosian, is encouraging. His ability to find hidden gems that fit a particular mold is impressive.

There are definitely spots for upgrades up front and in the backend IMO and I hope Dubas and team aren't shy if an opportunity presents itself. Just look at how Calgary has built their team, a team I thought last year would be a threat (and still might have been had they snuck into the playoffs).

A new coach, they shed Sam Bennett (a player I wanted here) and Giordano and they improve dramatically somehow. They were also close to landing Chairot. In short, they are going for a particular type of player and looking to win now.

Leafs must know that no playoff series matchup is going to be easy in the East.

Honestly, probably just the confidence in the GM to believe this is a slam dunk. This looks like the biggest fleecing Dubas has pulled since the Kapanen trade.

That we have may have just paid a second rounder for 2 guys who can't crack our lineup and don't address any direct need

you could say the same about Muzzin/Holl unfortunately

for sure, it's a tough situation to be in. But I think at the end of the day Muzzin at least brings a physical aspect. You can pick your poison for Holl/Liljegren. One can't understand defensive coverage, one turns the puck over too much. So I think they'll rotate the two based on match ups.

Wonder how he compares to Yushkevich he was a big mean champ

Seems to be the most likely moving forward....which means Dermott might have to start packing his bags.

It all depends on Lyubushkin not looing like hot garbage of course.

he doesn't compare at all , Yushkevich was a quality D

lets stop before we start overrating the guy which won't end well , if he was anything more than bottom pair filler we would have paid much more than we did or we would have been outbid for his services

Good depth trade, I'm assuming Dzingel probably doesn't play and Lyuba probably takes over the Bottom pair RD duties to play with Sandin.

This seems like it sets up a future deal in which we part with a Holl, Dermott or small chance even a Muzzin or Liljegren if it makes sense. But who knows, you can never have enough defensive depth, especially considering losing Muzzin last 2 playoffs was the essentially the nail in the coffin for us.

I still feel that we are one of the top teams but still not good enough to beat Florida or Tampa. Our Divison is hella tough.

Not overating, asking a question. Big mean tough defensive D, reminded me of him but it's been so long ago. Even if he's half the player I'd say that's good for bottom pairing

Gotta love the hubris.
"I CAN'T POSSIBLY be wrong about Ritchie needing a lot of value to dump, therefore a player I've never seen is worthless."

For those paying attention- Armstrong has straight up said that they were in on Ritchie this summer.

Ottawa fan here - Dzingel is well liked in Ottawa despite his shortcomings as a player. He’s fast, cocky and can fight surprisingly well for a college kid. He’s streaky so cute f he gets hot you could be into something. Kinda soft but Ottawa enjoyed watching him play.

Ritchie very recently cleared waivers , which means he had zero value around the league . I have no idea how much clearer you need his value to be explained to you .
