Some hottie I hook up with from time to time, and who is a pretty big Leaf fan made an interesting comment on the trade. She said finally the Leafs have a good looking guy on the team. Dzingel, she thinks Nylander is balding and overhyped.

She said the Leafs have a great team, tons of talent, but its close to last in the looks department. In the NHL.

So there we go, the zeke of women, for analytics.

I hope this Russian guy sticks, I so badly want, some competitive people who HIT.

If you have ever played hockey, a guy like that, you are always aware of. Its kind of ironic, we traded Ritchie, because of his all too evident, indifference.

Because when he hit someone, it was right up there with a Brian Glennie hit. And glennie was small compared to Ritchie.

Surprised Dubas, went after Ritchie in the first place, guess he was desperate, as I was, for someone who likes to lay the body on opponents.

Dzingel has talent. But his numbers have crumbled, have to think, its wear and tear/injuries, because the guy could really skate and zip.

He has a lot to gain from a good appearance here, almost 30, and the door is closing on him.

Dzingel certainly has a new fan, she said the team so badly needs a guy, with some looks. I find it so funny, because all of us are just concentrating on hockey db stuff, stats etc...

Interesting and different perspective.

At a glance deal seems decent for the Leafs. Picks up a couple useful depth pieces and sheds Ritchie's salary for next season.

Would imagine they'll end up taking the 3rd. Hard to see a GM playing the long game to wait 3 years for a draft pick.
Arizona will still be in a rebuild in 3 years, that's why they might take it.....

Have they?

YES, Leafs have missed BOGO.
Crease clearing, cycle stopping, check finishing and toughness was in short supply with our 7D.
Certainly was a missing element without BOGO. Just having a body that will force opposing players to play with their heads up with the potential of getting rubbed out will help.

Dubas recognized this before the season when he unsuccessfully tried to acquire 6'6" Jani Hakanpaa. Hopefully now he has his man.

We have our goon !

Pretty impressed Dubas killed 2 birds with 1 stone with this deal. Got rid of that Ritchie contract and added depth, especially RD. I'm not sure how good Dzingel is anymore, even Bush to be honest but he's got size/hits and from what I've read around the boards he plays playoff type hockey.

Have you watched the video? He gets his head caved in by Maroon.

Honestly, Justin Holl is a better fighter than that... And Justin Holl is not a good fighter.

Holl is a coward, will only jump on or fight a small player or he just turtles.

Remember too that fight was 3 years ago. Not sure how much fighting he had been exposed to at that point in his career as a 24 year old with less than a full season in the NHL.

Scott Sabourin vs. Justin Holl, October 09, 2021 - Ottawa Senators vs. Toronto Maple Leafs

Damn the Holl hate is at an all time high in Leafs nation. I wouldn't call him a coward, just kinda dumb.

Trade served it's purpose and you have to imagine there will be more to come.

What's the Defensive depth chart looking like now?

Rielly
Brodie
Muzzin
Lyubushkin
Sandin
Lilly
Holl
Dermott

Honestly, this looks like a great trade.
True, trading Ritchie and a pick is to clean up a swing and a miss. But damn, when you look at the signings of Kampf, Kase and Bunting, gotta give Dubas credit. Can't make a souffle without breaking some eggs. Three out of four look pretty good.
At worst not only did we dump a difficult contract, but we picked up some depth.
At best, we may have acquired a 4th pairing defenceman.
Time will tell.

Bunting, Spezza, Holl, Muzzin, Simmonds, and Dermott have all done it more often than Lyubushkin has in the past few years.

I've seen Rielly and Matthews do it too, but they are very selective about it. They have more value on the ice than in the box after all.

The Leafs typically reserve fighting for dirty hits, but they have absolutely stood up for teammates when that has happened. They will get into scrums when guys like Maroon do what he did before Lyubushkin fought him. All the time. They stand up for Campbell and Mrazek. Just, once again, they are selective about it. Especially with the unpredictability of the refs.

You have seen Matthews fight...do you have secret practice footage?
Not saying that I want him to especially with the wrist but he has had plently of opp and probably would smoke some guys and get more room if he did.

Just ask PL DuBois

RYAN DZINGEL (shoots left) - good PKer, crappy on the faceoff dot. Probably replaces Simmonds on wing?
SCOUTING REPORT
Has great skating ability and can play on either side of center at the highest level, which adds to his overall value. Works hard every shift and displays good energy. Lacks ideal size (6-0, 190 pounds) for the National Hockey League game, so he could stand to develop even more bulk and strength in order to maximize production.
Long Range Potential: Versatile, speedy winger with a little upside.

ILYA LYUBUSHKIN (shoots right) - Was playing top minutes with Jacob Chycrun, probably better suited for a 2nd pair or 3rd pairing.
SCOUTING REPORT
Has the size and strength to play at the highest level. Generally keeps things simple in the defensive zone and is rather reliable. Moves the puck pretty well and also displays physicality from the back end. Is not a major point producer, even at lower levels, so his main focus will be to defend in the National Hockey League. Needs to adjust his game in order to suit the smaller ice surfaces in North America.
Long Range Potential: Big, solid defenseman with a little upside.

When rating this trade adding 2 NHL depth players on expiring contracts are worth a future 3rd or future-future-2nd round draft pick.

Add in the fact that Arizona acquired a negative value player that was available for free 2 week ago makes this a bit of a head scratcher from the Arizona perspective.

Couldn't Arizona have gotten a 3rd for Lyubushkin alone if they were patient??

idk much about dzingle or lyub but the fact that leafs can get them for ritchie doesn't bode well

It more that the 'Yotes are stock piling picks, they shed two UFA's and get a pick for their contributions. Yotes have 8 picks in the first 2 rounds in this years draft. 31 picks in the next 3 years (7 rounds a year)

Dzingel is an interesting player , grit , tough , fights , gets to the dirty areas , stands up for teammates, can take the pressure off the top line kind of player .
Let’s see how they use him , another Bunting with a chance to play in Toronto. Just saying

If he brings some sandpaper while still being defensively responsible, he should be given a chance. This is especially true if he enjoys getting to the paint.

The way I've always viewed a team being constructed is good balance, some innocuous additions on a team pay big dividends in the playoffs where character and sacrifice truly matter. Few players should have guaranteed jobs in pro sports.

Consider players like Kase or Bunting. No Leaf fan had them on their radar, look at the effort the bring each night, the fearlessness in going to the net. You know neither of them are going to take a shift off come playoffs. Dubas had to have specifically targeted them for these reasons, above and beyond cap considerations.

There are a couple of forwards on this team that I just worry about the presence they will have in the post-season.
