LD Luca Cagnoni (2023, 123rd, SJS)

You may be recalling 39 year old Boyle. Prime Boyle was extremely solid defensively. Obviously had limitations because of his size but he was comfortably average and played very tough minutes. You don't play on the Canadian Olympic team if you aren't solid defensively.
I am basing it only when he was a Shark.
He seemed the anti Braun.

if he were to reach his peak potential, i feel like he's more likely to end up like a jared spurgeon than a dan boyle. boyle was more flashy offensively to me. spurgeon just does everything right.

I've started a few threads on here but this is one that I'm particularly happy to see come full circle. Cagnoni is a stud.

I remember a conversation I had with a team scout not long after his rookie W year. "No chance this kid sniffs the NHL unless he's buying a ticket" was the line that stuck with me. Whoops...

Kinda insane that Cagnoni will be the first defenseman drafted in 2023 to make his NHL debut. I know it wasn't a strong draft for defensemen and a lot of the better ones are playing in Europe, but that's pretty impressive for a 5'9" 4th rounder.
Never should’ve been drafted that late. I had him ranked 32 and my 7th best defenseman.

It’s insane that 31 defenseman were taken before him. I understand teams’ reservations about him. He’s a small defenseman that doesn’t bring elite skating. But, he has such great vision and was definitely showed more value than guys like Brady Cleveland.

What seems insane to me is that NHL GMs would rather draft a guy who has a 20% chance of being Vinny Desharnais than a 2% chance of being Sam Girard. You can always trade a 5th round pick for a Vinny Desharnais.

Oh well. Cagnoni might simply not have the physical tools to be a long-term NHLer, but I'd sure rather have the small chance that he does than Brady Cleveland.

That exactly how I feel. I think the draft strategy of these teams is extremely strange. What does it cost to get a bottom-six forward or a bottom pair defenseman? They are easily acquired in free agency.

It costs a ton to acquire guys like Girard, DeBrincat, Hutson, etc. I understand small guys don’t always work out, but I’d much rather take a swing on a guy like that than a guy I see can fit in the bottom of my lineup.

Yup. All else being equal, you draft the big skilled guy, but if there aren't any left at that draft position, take a flyer on a small skilled guy instead of someone whose best case scenario is Joe NHLer who you can sign every July for 2-3M. For most picks after like, late first, the most likely outcome is that you don't get an established NHLer anyway, so taking a swing doesn't hurt.

I had Cagnoni at 47 on my Final Top 100. Just didn't expect him to continue to progress at the rocket ship pace that he has & translate this well to the pro game right away.

As I said over at the Sharks board, the fact that he’s a point behind the league leading defenseman in points in the AHL as a 5’9 rookie is wildly impressive. The AHL is known as a pretty goony league too, so it’s not like Cagnoni is doing this against kids.

We’ll see how he does in the NHL but I don’t think he’s a guy who is going to have a ton of issue with the fast pace of the NHL, he seems to process the game at a very high level already. There’s no doubt he’ll lose some board battles and not be able to box guys out, etc. etc., but I feel pretty optimistic that he’s going to surprise the naysayers. He’s done so at every level — at some point, people are going to have to stop doubting this kid.
