I'm excited to talk about Hutson here. I know people are split on whether he's even on Montreal or AHL, but I think he's going to have a big season in Montreal and contend for the Calder.
We just have to wait to see how the pre season plays out. We don't know how hard the other young dmen come out of camp. Big question mark on the right side and then it's playing chess.

Yep. By no means do I think he's a lock, but I personally want him on the team and I think he'll have a great season if he makes the team.

There are many factors that could determine wether he will be in the Calder race or not :

1. If mtl's pp1 consists of 4 forward and 1 defender then he would have to take Matheson's spot. If he does then yeah, he would have good odds to be in the Calder race. But good luck dethroning Matheson.

If mtl's pp1 consists of 3 forwards and 2 defenders then his odds of being in the Calder race would be good. But that would mean that either Caufield or Laine would be relegated the 2nd pp unit.

If he plays on the 2nd pp unit then his odds are severely lowered.

Yeah he's a lock. The Canadiens players went on the record telling journalists he's going to win the Calder this year, when has that ever happened? There's a ton of excitement around this guy going on with the team.

And there's reports we're going to start with 8 defensemen.

He’s a lock to make the team for sure. I thought his last two games at the end of last year he was out of position in the D zone too often but that can be (easily) taught and cleaned up. I see no reason for him to go to Laval

I mean no reason ? Experience/ conquering that level ? I think he cracks the squad but imo it’s not a disaster if he spends time in the A . Never a bad thing ( within reason) to get some seasoning. Is Laine or Caufield on PP 2 an actual possibility ? Figured both were locks on the top unit

I don't think he needs to dethrone Matheson, I think Habs need to plan past Matheson.

I'd put Hutson on PP1 to help prepare for the near future when Matheson isn't a Hab anymore.

I dont understand why some people dont think things out. Last year the habs only had 1 good line, Cauf suzu ans slaV. so if the penilty was called at the end of their shift that 1st line needs to sit for 3-4 minutes to recharge, so NO REAL PP. same idea for math and hutson one of them will be fresh at the start of any PP. Now for the last part, in the last 5 minutes and the habs down by 1 and they need to tie the game, so defence is not important Habs can ice cauf, suzu, slav, lanie, hutson and math ( no goalie) thats a lot of FIREPOWER to get the tie goal. Just think how the leafs or oil or tampa can put their top 6 for the PP blitz. Habs lost 30 games last year by 1 goal due to young dmen and almost no offence due to massive injuries.

Yeah. This will be a tough year with regards to competition, but if he plays a full season, I think he's going to be in the discussion.
Sure he will be in the discussion if all goes in a very optimistic way offensively but even then the Calder this year is for Michov to lose and there are a couple of guys in San Jose and Stank that will be good bets as well.

Rightly or wrongly Dmen seldom do as well in Calder voting as some might think.

Everybody is assuming Lane is gonna take PP1 early on but I don't know , Marty has shown nothing to suggest he has the gusto to do that to a vet like Matheson (understandable since hes been coaching for like 4 years of his life lol ) , I will be quite surprised if he starts on PP1 , even if he is better in practice than Matheson

I think he ends up on it by mid season

It's going to be a tough year for sure. I could see the SJ guys splitting some of the vote. Michkov is likely the frontrunner, but Stankoven and Hutson are right up there in terms of talent. I don't think Hutson is THE frontrunner, but he has the ability to win it or at least make a case if he plays a full year. I could definitely see him on the top PP unit midway through the year.

No chance Hutson is a frontrunner. He might not even make the team this season, right?

Hutson is the real deal and will make many doubters look silly.
Left handed Erik Karlsson.
It's harder at his position to win the Calder so I don't want to say he will win it with some of the other young guys at forward.

I definitely see a 45-55 pt season out of him this year. Some people may think that's crazy at his age, but he's just too damn talented.

Doubtful he's sent down. He's basically competing against Struble and Xhekaj. Struble is also waiver exempt. Xhekaj can also play the right so it's likely Barron is in the press box.

Matheson-Guhle
Hutson-Savard
Struble-Xhekaj
Barron

Dropping Harris really unclogged the jam. Not ideal to have only one natural RD but that's how it is until Reinbacher and Mailloux come up. All these LD are basically trying out for who doesn't get traded, though it seems Hutson is the natural Matheson successor. Savard will also likely be traded at some point this season.

Hutson basically has the inside track to a spot unless they want Guhle back on the left.

I think he makes the team and maybe David Reinbacher starts in Laval but both guys could make the opening day roster, it's just so hard to say what the expectations are for the Habs this season as on paper they look better but there will probably be growing pains still.

I am a bit surprised given the number of D the team has. But another reason to watch / pay attention to the Habs this season.
