LD Artyom Duda (2022, 36th, ARI)

CHL rules question. Can Duda if he decides his best option is North America decide to play CHL? As he was never drafted in CHL draft can he pick where he would like to play? I would imagine as he was never in the CHL import draft he can’t play CHL but not too sure?

wouldn't he still have to go through the import draft?

That’s what I’m guessing but unsure if he could just be a free agent this season and pick a team? Kitchener….
My guess is he would have to go through the draft, the import draft is in place to stop teams from loading up on foreign guys and taking spots from Canadian kids, So I would expect if a player tried to come over without going through the draft the other teams would make a stink

So, what are his options at this point?
I assume he is not going back to Russia.
AHL? USHL? Pro in Switzerland/Sweden/Finland?

The most realistic I think is to wait until the KHL contract is up on 1st of May and then sign wherever he wants. Although maybe there is some AHL/ECHL option that won't care about the KHL contract, not sure here.

Why not terminate the contract now?

He'll still be paid at a new team, if it's pro. If it's junior, he's then chosen that the money is secondary to getting his career back on track.

Isn't it more important to be playing games the next half season than to get a little additional money?

Because CSKA aren't willing to do that.

:joker:

His agent is a buffoon.
From what I understood his agent is Mark Gandler, who has a reputation of not caring too much about that kind of things. Previously his agent was Dan Milstein, but they parted ways as soon as Duda came up with the idea of running away with an active KHL contract.

Glad he's gonna play soon.
This is an incredible step backwards in terms of quality of competition. I'm surprised he didn't end up in the USHL.

USHL doesn't allow players with active KHL contracts - recently Belarussian Ivan Anoshko tried that and failed.

Will his contract lapse with time or does he need to fulfill his end of it?
If I understand correctly it will expire in May, but if he will decide to return to the KHL at some point, he will have to fulfill that last year by re-signing for that year on the same conditions.

CHL teams are (still) banned from selecting Russians and Belarussians in the import draft so nobody could have had him on their protected list.

He'll be playing the balance of the season against 21-25 year old former CHL players. It's not ideal, but not the disaster/catastrophe some are making it out to be.

Gotta love USPORTS eligibility rules!

Incredibly odd seeing a legit NHL prospect in USPORTS... and at my alma mater.

I assume that coach was the in at TMU? It is quite a coup for a Canadian university team.

I was wondering the same thing. Would make sense with us contending this year and with an open import spot. But I don't think the rules allow it.

Ah yes I forgot about this.

Its a pretty unique situation. USports is stronger than the CHL but a step below NCAA. He should do well there
