Team Austria was outshot 28-1 over the last 25 minutes of the first relegation battle.

If Reinbacher can play, it would really help them out, because things are not looking good for them otherwise.

In all fairness, the major penalty was a major ( :] ) momentum switch. But generally - I agree with you.

This is pure nonsense. Penalty happened with 10 minutes left and Latvia had already taken the lead.

Have any of the relegation series got to 3 games lately? I don’t really remember any of them. These really should be televised.

Except for the thing that the opposite is true - a major penalty was most likely the result of a vain attempt to push back after Austrians were under siege for 15 minutes and finally fell behind on the scoreboard.

Germany - Kazakhstan, quite shockingly considering the German roster, went to 3 games in 2020.

The Austrians were the better team in the 2nd period, but they simply do not have any depth and their bottom pairing/bottom 6 guys simply cannot keep up with Latvia. Outclassed.

Well, since the score in this one is 4-0 I fully expect an argument about how SOG mean Austria was actually the better team.

Deserved survival after all. Norway should be a tougher opponent, if everything goes according to world ranking next year and both teams meet in relegation playoff.

This might be a bit controversial opinion but to me, Germany looks weaker than the Norwegians. I think the goal should be to avoid the relegation playoff at all and it's a very feasible one.

Norway has 16 players eligible to return from their D1A win for next year. could certainly survive.
Latvia isn't exactly bound to a major decline either, goaltending is probably the biggest question mark, especially in contrast to Norway and Germans. But still, 3 teams that look very close to each other in level. One of those will be making the QFs which is the real golden ticket.

How’s Locmelis & Vilmanis looking ?
Not amazing to be honest, like longshot projects from the NHL perspective. But again, it is partially simply due to the way this team plays.

Also "worst team in the WJC" and whatnot but Austrians with Scherzer, Reinbacher, Auer and Rohrer seem like the clear favorites to win the 1A next year.

Seems this van Ee kid just tries desperately not to get back to top division next year. Not his type of climate in Canada or something.

Today they were the better team when their top 2 lines and the Reinbacher pairing was on. They created more chances and on average should have scored more goals than they did. So clearly they were a little unlucky, but they were outclassed by a much deeper opponent.

That's what the SOG counter does not reflect - how bad some of the mistakes were at their own end. I don't see any relevance for comparison with the previous Latvia games.

How’s Locmelis & Vilmanis looking ?
There were some flashes of brilliance and a couple of dominating shifts from each of them, but nothing consistent.

Locmelis and Vilmanis were OK, but Veinbergs was a bit of a disappointment.

Only loosely relating to the relegation battle but what is the IIHF plan when they allow Russia and Belarus back in? Surely forcing Russia to play at the lower levels isn't it, and Belarus had earned their way up just before they were expelled as well. 11 doesn't make any sense, relegating a 2nd team after they survive doesn't make any sense. Perhaps going to a 12 team tournament once Russia and Belarus are back?

Likely either expand the tournament or boot Russia down the ladder to some extent. I would say expanding is the most likely scenario but I don't recall any actual conversations about it.

By that time it might be a single country.

I remember hearing something that Russia's spot would be given back when they are allowed to return, so my guesses are;

1) 12 team tournament (whether that means no relegation + promotion + Russia, or 2 teams promoted + 1 team relegate + Russia) with two teams relegated(how they would do that I don't know maybe worst team each group or a relegation playoff bottom 4 team or something)

2) 11 team tournament with two teams relegated

3) Tournament before Russia comes in have 2 teams relegated Russia + Promoted team come in.

Personally I like option 3, at most just needs enough notice I.E they say Russia will not be re-instated for 2024 tournament but the 2025 tournament. All that would need to be sorted out is how they relegate. Option 1 is the next best, but as we have see with the bottom end teams, it's not ready to be expanded yet (think if you had Latvia, Austria, and Norway all get to be in). That is no offense to those nations but we all know how that would end. Now remember before Russia was kicked and because of Covid No relegation but still promotion, they were planning on 11 teams.

In no way should a team be kicked out or not be allowed to be promoted just so Russia can come back and we stay at 10 teams, and I want Russia back in. For obvious reason why they are not and no need to get in a debate on that, but in a vacuum the tournament is missing Russia.
