Last year for Tavares if we don't go deep in the playoffs?

In a cash strapped league his 11m cap hit and 7.95m in actual salary starting next year and for two more years after that might be tempting for some teams. Of course he would have to waive his NMC - which he might or might not.

I'd love to see him shipped out for the right package of help now and in the future. There's a real stigma associated with 50% of the cap going to four players. Will be glad when that's no longer the case.

Thoughts?

He's not going anywhere. He has a NMC and a young family now. We're stuck with the 40 million crew until Dubas is gone, for better or worse.

Stuck with JT and Matthews (although I don't know if you call it "stuck" for him) yes. If we don't look really good in the conference semi's one of Marner and Nylander get traded after Dubas is fired.

Mind you I like Dubas, Nylander, and Marner. I just can't see a scenario where Dubas is still here if we don't go deep and whoever takes over will almost be forced to shake up the core.

Tavares, fortunately or unfortunately is stuck with us for his remaining years on that contract

Barring a deep run, it’s gonna be nylander and/or Marner with Dubas.

What? Tavares has a NMC. What does that have to do with Dubas being here or not?

If a new GM came in he wouldn't be able to rip up the no movement part of the contract.

With his NMC, he's not the one going anywhere

Think this team will be better next year, still hopeful this year but lots of question marks

I think the worst indictment on the John Tavares experiment is he’s going to most likely retire a Leaf - not because it’s a tremendously fruitful partnership - but because of bulletproof paperwork.

Generally he’s a vanilla good upper end of the roster type player but obviously his cap hit and flat cap prevents the Leafs from making more exciting big splashes on the trade and free agency market to get closer to a championship.

He likes California right and might waive to avoid the backlash of a bad contract in Toronto? Swap him for Kopitar.

Tavares has been good in his time in Toronto, but nobody is taking a 31 year old making 11 million for the next 3 years. Plenty of teams would like the player, but not that contract.

And the NMC too lol

"Deep in the playoffs" is subjective in itself. I'm thinking something would have to change if the team doesn't make it to, or progress in, the playoffs. Trading away Tavares (NMC and captain) is one of the last things I'd expect to occur during the next offseason for the team though.

Can’t foresee the captain being traded. It’d be one of Marner or Nylander traded to shake the core up a bit. Don’t think for a bunch of pieces either — kind of like a Johansen/Jones or Hall/Larsson type move.

Tavares isn’t being traded anywhere. The best move might be to move him onto the wing instead of playing him at center.

yeah he'll end up going to wing. which would be made easier if we could ever draft a decent centre outside the top 10.
