One that came to mind was the 1989-1990 Quebec Nordiques.
Terrible team that used 42 different skaters + 7 different goals (49 total players). Keep in mind Quebec made (6) in-season trades and claimed (2) players from waivers.

The '83 - '84 Penguins dressed 48 players.
In addition to being a terrible team, they must've had a lot of injuries....only 4 players played 70 games and only 3 more played 60 games.

2008-09 Lightning had a total of 50 players (45 skaters, 5 goalies) play at least 1 game, possibly the largest in the cap era.
I also recall some mention at the time about them using an unusual amount of defencemen as well (22 total), but I don't know where that stands all-time.

Wow, good find! I just checked and at least 28 of them played for the Maine Mariners that season, and the roster count for the Mariners was 49, meaning the two teams carried 76 players between them in order to keep the Bruins supplied with healthy players. This could be the winner, unless somebody can dig up another team with more than 55.
I looked at a handful of other teams at random, and it seems hitting the mid-to-high 40s as a roster count hasn't necessarily been as unusual as we might think. Wondering if any other teams managed to dress 50 or more.

2003-04 NY Rangers had 50 players that season, 45 skaters 5 goalies.
1995-96 Isles came close with 49, 4 being goalies.

Now, whether that's the record for most impactful players, I can't say...
Probably a tough database query to join, but maybe using ice time from the previous season, one could imperfectly determine a proxy of "most impact man games lost" in a year...
Cumulatively, Pittsburgh is/was a big injury prone team. They're certainly the most-accomplished-despite-injury team this side of the lockout.

I read that Montreal indeed has the record. Previously it was the 2003-2004 LA Kings, with 629 man games lost.
Arizona almost broke this record in 2021-2022 as well, with 627 man games lost.

It would be interesting to see a season by season tracking of roster turnover (which includes trades, signings, prospect promotions, retirements, releases, etc) and data map that against man games lost to see if there are any statistical correlations over time that measure the impact of the number of players dressed to team success. Obviously the quality/importance of a player in a turnover or games lost situation has a deeper impact, but I wonder if anything can be gleaned by looking at raw data in terms of number of roster players used per season.
It looks like the Habs dressed 46 players last year.

Looks like the Oilers hit 49 in 2013-14, which was in some ways the seasonal-nadir of the franchise.
There's obviously a correlation here between (a) lots of injuries and (b) suckage.
