Looks fine to me. Sure it might have been a second late but by that time he's already in a position to hit him and following through.

It felt a late watching it the first time, but after a few rewatches I think it's pretty clean. A little on the late side, but I don't think egregiously so. Borderline penalty.

I'd say that's finishing your check. But if it was up to this place there'd be no hitting in hockey.

So how long are you gonna be eligible to be hit after the puck is no longer in your posession? Until the play is called dead or what?
I mean if there wasn't a rule about this stuff, obstruction would get even worse. Why play the puck if you can just take out your opponents? This might end up as being rugby on ice.

I was always taught that if a guy is within stick length when you have the puck, or before you released it, expect a hit.

I was also taught not to admire your pass/shot.

Not a blindside as Landeskog took a route that led him to hit him square in the chest.

Borderline late hit. Unnecessary on Landy's part, but Schmaltz needs to stop admiring his shot and pay attention out there. Clean hit to the chest.

There's a difference between admiring a shot and watching the puck. He's looking for the rebound and even if he wasn't, what could he have done different to avoid the hit?

Sometimes, there is little choice and still no one needs to be at fault.

Don't play dumb. There's always been a grace period. Coaches have told players to finish their checks since hockey came to be.

If it was delivered a second sooner it would've been a great hit. It's definitely late though. Should've been a penalty.

Late and dirty. Not going to argue the legality of it. But it was late and dirty.

I'm not saying that places more blame on Landeskog (though I do feel it was late). Just arguing that the notion of admiring a pass/shot is what gets players into trouble on a hit like this one.

It was late, no question about it. Human reaction time is around 0.1 s, with that perspective Landeskog had plenty of time to avoid the hit. Landeskog himself made the effort to find the other players phone number and apologized.

The hit was delivered .46 seconds after Schmaltz shot the puck.

Second earlier Landeskog would have teleported to another dimension.

No, it definitely wasn't. There's a good 1.5 seconds between Schmaltz releasing the puck and Landeskog hitting him. If it was only half a second this wouldn't even be a thread. It's quite clearly a late hit.
