He signed a contract of one year for one million dollars.

-he was payed to be a fourth liner
-he played like a fourth liner
-he brought some energy
-not much in terms of offense but was defensively responsible enough
-great locker room guy
-he is a vet who did not complain about being a healthy scratch a few times

He was a very low risk/low reward type of signing. I have no problem with what he brought to the team. I think that Dumont or Blunden can take his spot next year. I would really like to thank him for his one year of service.

He was solid but forgettable. We got what we paid for.

He never was THAT physical, he had some good seasons on some good teams and was a cheap shot artist on a Penguins team filled with them, but he's mostly in the NHL because he's a good defensive grinder who was our best 4th liner at getting the puck out of our own zone. Good locker room guy who can actually play. Would have been nice if he was in better physical shape to hit people, but we knew he was somewhat broken down.

He did his job. If we can get a younger, tougher upgrade it would be ideal. I'd rather bring Halpern back but if they want to bring him back and he doesn't mind being benched most of the time, it's not a bad thing. Most likely I wish him luck elsewhere. He did his job.

He never hurt the team particularly. He looked like what he was - an okay player who was recovering from injuries. I find it pretty hard to dislike him, he certainly filled the role of a fourth line defensive player and started playing pretty well towards the end.

Armstrong is another example of a flawed player on this team.
Not skilled enough to play on the third line, not physical enough to play on the fourth and can't/won't drop the gloves.
I'd rather he be replaced with a tougher more physical player for those fourth line duties.

I'm a big Reaves fan, the guy knows how to control his temper too, Robyn Regher hit him from behind the other night no call he got up and skated to the bench, no swinging or punching or taking a stupid penelty

Gomez has been a very good fit for San Jose, with lowered expectations and a more appropriate salary.

He was ok. Better later on than at first. As a player patched in for depth, I don't see how he hurt. His off-ice character may have helped. But of course, the team has precious few roster openings projected for next season, and there's no way we can bring him back next season.

At least, I hope there's no way. I wouldn't necessarily put it past Therrien to want him back, and at least request him back. But we need better players.

Well, if you expected him to fight, you were setting yourself up for a disappointment.

I want a more physical fourth line so one of him or Moen has to go and be replace by a more physical player. I think I'd rather trade Moen and re-sign Armstrong though....

He plays a 3rd-4th line role for them. He's doing the job they're paying him to do.

I'd take a 40-point 3rd liner who can win faceoffs and play on the 2nd PP unit for the peanuts they're giving him. Not for 7.35 million, but for what he's being paid, he's done what they needed him to do.

I don't see how anybody could say Armstrong has zero grit. He's not physically imposing or intimidating in any way, if that's what you meant to say. He would put his body in the way of a shot on the PK. He hustles and works hard and if anything seems to get more out of his exceedingly meagre physical skills than you'd think he ought to. Hustle and consistent effort are a part of "grit" to me. I don't think he actively shies away from physicality in any degree, he seeks it out as much or more than could be expected.

What the Habs lack are certain combinations and degrees of "grit"... Armstrong is "gritty"... but useless overall despite that. They could stand to get some players who can score (even if just chipping in) who are similarly gritty. Or, players who are gritty in ways that can actually physically affect the opposition. Gallagher is gritty, and scores. Prust is gritty, chips in on scoring, and can sometimes have a physical impact. They just need to get more combinations like that through the lineup.
