News Article: Lafreniere, expected No. 1 pick in 2020 NHL Draft, to skip QMJHL season

As the NY Post article I posted above points out, Ottawa would have to include Brady Tkachuk in a package with picks for the Rangers in an overwhelming offer to consider trading out of #1.

no, i’m not doing it. The #3 is a good risk while the #5 is a bigger risk. Likely only Tkachuk is here next season. So we look to the following season for maybe the other two and an additional before we see better productivity. At that point Tkachuck needs a huge payday,

I wouldn’t take just 3 and 5. But if it’s 3 and 5 and maybe another player like Tkachuk and maybe someone else and we give a little bit as well, it’s definitely worth thinking about. But if Ottawa won’t go beyond 3 and 5 then I say forget it.
 
Unless it's an unfair deal (Brady Tkachuk + Chabot + 3rd + 5th, or McDavid for Lafreniere) I will be disappointed if the Rangers trade the 1st overall.

The 3rd and the 5th are really overvalued on this board.

What I don't want to hear from Bettman to start the draft....."We have a trade to announce". This fandom has been waiting FOREVER to get talents like Kakko and Lafreniere in the draft, there's really no reason to try and outsmart yourself. You want superstars that you don't have to pay out the ass for in free agency? This is it, soak it in - time to take advantage. Quality over quantity.

It needs to be Tkachuk, 3 and 5 otherwise forget it.
 
3, 5 and Tkachuk isn't enough for me. Again, we're talking not just a potentially great talent, but the type of player who becomes the face of the franchise, the on-ice leader, the marketing icon and a player who has been the center of attention for many years now. There is more value to Lafreniere than what can be encapsulated in what a trade is going to cost player-wise. The Rangers are going to take Lafreniere.

And let's not forget the 3 ELC years of Lafreniere. That seems to get lost in the mix when talking about value. Getting that type of player for 925k a year until 2023 is just amazing and a big reason why I wouldn't trade the pick for Eichel or Matthews straight up even

When's the last time we've had a Canadian star? I feel like we had a run where all of our first round picks were US and we like Sweden. Wouldn't mind a Canadian boy now.

The last Canadian we drafted in the 1st round was McIlrath in 2010

The last Canadian forward we drafted in the 1st round was Jamie Lundmark in 1999

The last Canadian from the QMJHL we drafted in the 1st round was Lucien DeBlois in 1977

Searching the net, not sure which “tiers” are correct yet it appears unanimous that Laf is Tier 1 while the names/tiers after Byfield are juggling. No way i want Tier 1 traded for a tier 3 followed by a questionable tier at pick 5. Especially the way the Rangers have historically drafted.

Yeah, I think the ELC is a big factor in my mind as well. As much because there’s only a year gap between when his ELC would be up and when Kreider’s full NMC becomes a limited NTC. The timing works out better.

And people need to remember, despite the presence of a lot of talent on the roster, we still have young players and prospects who need to grow into roles before this team truly becomes a contender. It doesn’t really do us much good to acquire a player like Tkachuk if we still have Kakko and Chytil trying to take steps forward, and lack a semblance of a solid top-4 on the back end because prospects haven’t arrived. Inflating the payroll further at this exact moment doesn’t improve the team much more than keeping the payroll in check by getting the guy on the ELC.

At that point why not just tell Ottawa to include the rights to the franchise too? They can be the Rangers Canadian shuttle team

Sheesh unfair isn’t even close to describing that

And how’s this for crazy? Lafreniere would still only be 25. Kakko only 26.

So in the year 2027, Lafreniere will only be as old as Trouba is now, and Kakko will be Zibanejad’s age.

and considering zibanejad's linear progression as a ranger, hed be 33 and scoring 200 points a season. we will have a great team.
