In all honesty he’ll just look completely wrong without number 11 to start. It’s a perfect number for Laf.

Is it really up to Messier though? This isn't like DeAngelo and Esposito. No 11 is retired by the Rangers. It would be a lot harder to "unretire" a number rather than asking some former player for their blessing.

Of course this could have been avoided had they done what they do in Toronto where they honor numbers, instead of retiring them

What kind of process do you think there is for retiring a number? It’s essentially a company policy, which can just be amended by a new company policy. The permission from the player is more symbolic than anything else, and it’s unlikely the team would amend the policy without that permission.

Really, though, this whole thing is unlikely. If this were somebody on the Crosby level, maybe... but Lafreniére will find another number.
