This was party of my rationale though. With the young talent the rangers have would you be willing to lose some of them for an aging player with a history of concussions. But the Zibanejad contract discussion is still a year away so I digress.

If he wants to stay hes going to have to concede on the years. Maybe he'd be willing, but it's a lot to ask of anyone.

So much is going to change between now and then though whether we like it or not. For all we know Laf ends up shifting to C and crushes it.

Planning ahead is fine but there is no reason to think that we won't figure out how to keep Mika
Lead with that next time. lol

I don't disagree with you, I just think think re-signing him is not as easy as a choice as people think. He's aging and the rangers have a lot of young talent they'll likely want to keep. Something will have to give. But like you said we will get to that bridge when we cross it.

I know this helps your argument, but if Mika crushes it the next two years he'll be getting paid far more than the 8M you estimated. I could easily see him getting 10M. That said, if he dominates the next two years I'd find a way to free up the cash for him.

Well Zib is making 5.3 right now
For his production this year that is a massive value
If kept up I'm sure they'd have no problem finding another 5 mil
Especially after around 20 mil is relieved after this season

A contract like Buch may not be extended to make room
You really dont need Buch if Laf plays with Zib
And Buch at more than what hes making to play 3rd line isn't wise so

ALSO if VK develops then it really is Bye Bye Buchy

yeah I was making a conservative estimate. 10 mill is what I see as more likely.

I think it's more worthy to wonder if it's worth signing a 29-year old Zibanejad to a 7 or 8 year deal than whether we'll be able to fit that deal under the cap.

another potential factor in that decision if that barkov is a ufa the same year and is 2+ years younger. I can’t imagine us not signing Mika to an extension but smart teams weigh the options and make the tough calls if needed

Shesty's next contract likely not 7m. I don't think. He gets 7m if the Rangers are making deep playoff runs when his contract is up. I think they can make a pretty team friendly deal when his ELC is up.

At age 25, he would have 2 RFA years remaining. That does affect his AAV

How points does he end up with should he play next year on the Rangers?

If we'd just let him be, 20/50-ish ? See, we never had such a pro ready kid.

Also I have to be very careful, as I was expecting way more production from Kaapo too in his first season, so my estimate here is more conservative.

edit: sry, I meant 20G/50PTS

I doubt that he is going to get anything less than 6 years. And it will be north of $10. And he is going to get it and rightfully so. The guy just had the best year by a Rangers center since Gretzky's retirement year. You are going to have to play someone top line center money.

IMO, that is a lot to ask a teen.

I can see 6.

But remember, we have the opportunity to offer 8. That is a non starter and honestly 7 would be as well.

Much, too much to speculate on that given that it is 2 years out. If I had to guess, I would say the situation will be settled before that year's TDL.

The Rangers have to draft Laf. No trades, no Byfield. Come on.

Gretzky was interviewing some of top prospects a ways back (Laf, Byfield, Stutzle, Drysdale & Sanderson) and when he asked them all who had the best shot out of them, the others quickly said Laf. When they were asked who they didnt want to be hit by, I thought it would be Byfield, but again they all said Laf, as they all had a chuckle. They didn't take a second to respond.

The most impressive thing to me about this kid isnt his 297 points in 173 games. We all know a top pick is going to tear up the score sheet. What I like the most is his 122 PIMS in the last two seasons.

To me, that shows he plays with emotion, is physical and competes. That to me right there is good to see considering he comes from the Q and will ignorantly be written off as by some a dipsy-doodler who is all flash with no balls.

This team needs another elite leader going forward, someone who can help this team win a Cup. I think Laf has a lot of those tools and the body to match. You can't pass up on a chance to draft a kid like this.

You're making it more complicated than the reality is (even though nothing you stated is wrong). Unless we go a stupidly good trade offer, we aren't moving the pick and will just take Laf.

Don’t see why we should care about this when we’re gonna be drafting Byfield ? :naughty:
Only if we traded down to 3 for a massive offer. Lol

We already know Laf is number 1 on our board, but I don't think ANY GM in the league would have the balls to not take Laf at 1.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Rangers are one of the teams that have Byfield outside of the top 5.

I’m starting to prefer the Old Russian Five after reading some of your posts.

Lmao.

I don't think his worries are THAT unfounded though. A little bit over the top? Yeah, but we are simultaneously in a great position and a realllly tough position.
