Sorry for a bit silly question… but me and my friends are arguing about best players of each NHL team in XXI century. 23-man roster. We are talking not about the most well-known names, but about players which were (are) the most useful and respected. For LA I think about something like that.

What do you think?

Forwards:

Robitaille – Kopitar - Palffy
Frolov – Carter – Brown
Cammalleri – Stoll – Williams
Lewis – Handzus – Laperriere
Reserve: Richards? Toffoli?

Defence:
Doughty – Norstrom
Visnovsky – Green
Mitchell – Martinez
Reserve: Scuderi? Johnson? Muzzin? Schneider?

Goalies:
Quick – Bernier
Jones?

Without putting too much thought in to it:

Not enough Deadmarsh
Cammalleri was on useless teams. At least Frolov got into a playoff series.
Might have Potvin as the back-up.

Any team would tilt heavily to those that were on the 2001 squad and then anyone from 2012-present if "respected" is part of the equation. Players from the playoff black hole of 2003-09 would have a tough time cracking the team, hence my exclusion of Cammalleri. I mean, in the end, even Dustin Penner is more important than Camm or Frolov.

If it was about just the best players, Jason Allison would be all over this thing. I'd probably put him at #2C and move Carter to wing. He was a total monster out there and the best assist man the Kings have had this century. Might be the 2nd best the Kings have ever had behind #99 as far as passing ability goes.

Wait...I'd probably just put the LAPD line together and call it a day.

Smolinski instead of Handzus.

Cammalleri should be out. I'd get Gaborik and Demitra in there someplace.

People often forget what a good player Mathieu Schneider was.

Rob Blake, Adam Deadmarsh, Marian Gaborik, Jason Allison, Pavol Demitra and possibly Tanner Pearson are the biggest omissions I see in your lineup.

Also, Aaron Miller was a very good stay at home dman in his prime.

Agree RE: Demitra if all we are doing is making a team of the best players. Not sure if OP is trying to do that.

One season of Demitra doesn't get him in here since that season sucked. I'd put Allison on it still just because of how good the LAPD line was and a playoff appearance.

Schneider was really good. If we are going simply best players, have to hold your nose and put Blake in there too.

Deadmarsh-Allison-Palffy
Robitaille-Kopitar-Brown
Demitra-Richards-Carter
Avery-Laperriere-Simmonds

Doughty/Norstrom
Blake/Visnovksy
Schneider/Greene

Potvin

I'd go in to battle with that team. I'm obviously straying from OP a bit. Shoehorned Demitra to LW so I could roll a tough across-the-board 4th line that isn't completely devoid of skill.

I'd really have to sit and think about this though if I was trying to put together the "best" team. Obviously Avery doesn't make anyone's team but mine...just think that 4th line would be really fun to watch.

Some notable omissions include Kyle Calder, Randy Jones, John Zieler, Fukafuji, and Denis Gauthier imo. But I'm probably forgetting some others too

Here is mine based on post-2000 when I started actively watching Kings games (although I recall the 80s-90s era as well but was a kid):

Ziggy-Allison-Deadmarsh (physical and skill line, probably best line combo I saw on the Kings, but short-lived).
Robitaille-Kopitar-Gaborik (front net pressence guy, puck possession beast and finisher)
Pearson-Carter-Toffoli (proven chemistry)
Williams-Richards/Laperriere (heart and sole line)

Defense:

Visnovsky/Doughty
Norstrom/Blake
Mitchell/Aaron Miller

Goalies:

Quick
Potvin

Pretty good. I'd have Williams on mine if I didn't go with fighters on my 4th line.

No Brown is a real tough one though. He was awesome until signing the contract.

If its 2010-2013 Brown, I would rotate him with Gaborik on the second line. Also, Voynov would be the 7th defenseman on my roster if not suspended by the NHL.

I almost went Voynov over Greene.

Brown was such a wrecking ball and performed prior to 2010 as well.

Always have a soft spot for him since he was easily at the top of entertainment value for a STH during the playoff drought. So many hits.

Looked through my old card collection today (some highlights).......you know youre old when no one in your collection is still an active player **except Jagr**

I dig yours, mine would be similar, needs maybe Klatt on the 4th to replace Avery. Conroy, Smolinski, Miller and Handzus healthy scratches?
