For a change, Frozen Royalty is your ONLY source for news from the practice facility of the LA Kings for Monday January 30...

On a day when the team was rushing to get to Los Angeles International Airport for their flight to Arizona, Tyler Toffoli talked about his injury status/recovery and Alec Martinez discussed what his team's biggest issues are and how to meet the tough challenge ahead of them in the final ten weeks of the 2016-17 season.

LA Kings: Toffoli Update; Martinez On The Tough Road Ahead

Good to read that Toffoli practiced today with the team. But not so good that he's still not completely healthy. But it sounds like something he may have to play thru or with.

Toffoli indicated that he is still feeling some discomfort and that he is working on how to deal with that.

“It’s something I’ve got to get used to,†he noted. “Hopefully, it’s not going to linger. But it’s one of those things where you don’t know what’s going to happen[/QUTE].â€

It infuriates me that Toffoli has been out for over a month and we aren't told what is wrong with him. The NHL needs to change their ludicrous injury reporting system.

why? if people know what his injury is and where it is they can target him. what does it matter if the fans know or not?

Prefer it this way. Can be maddening as a fan, especially as day-to-day stretches into months, but safer for the players.

Bummer that we've lost yet another impact player for over a month.

well the NFL isnt necessarily the best at protecting its players either. not a great model for a sports organization

The NFL requires reporting and it's not an issue as far as targeting goes.

If you look at the history it goes back to 1946 when there were rumors that the championship game was fixed. And where a few specific players on a football roster could really have an effect on the outcome of a game that really isn't the case with hockey as much.
But where it started as that it is really more about betting on the game and fantasy teams, which is really a form of betting on the games.

But bottom line we don't need to know we want to know.

Those are all fine arguments, but targeting just doesn't seem to be one that holds up.

it was either Sutter or Torts that mentioned it not too long ago in a post or pre game interview, cant remember. makes complete sense if you think about it.

Teams, naturally, take full advantage of the leeway they're given by that language. But this isn't necessarily about a player's right to privacy. NHL teams don't want opponents to target injured players -- or, more specifically, the injured parts of injured players. The thinking goes that if you announce a player will miss a game because of a sore wrist, you might as well paint a bullseye on that wrist when he returns to the lineup.

Reporting injuries always has been a touchy subject in the NHL. And the rules adopted by general managers in 2008 created a tug of war between secrecy and transparency.

Revealing injuries would give opponents a competitive advantage, some teams say. And if injuries are revealed, they might be targeted with a whack of a stick to get opponents out of a game.

seems that same exact argument is why teams arent disclosing injuries anymore

It's a silly argument because you can take any player out of the game with a good hard high hit to the head. You don't need to exploit a weak point.

But it's a lot less than a 5-minute major and potential suspension to poke a guy's knee every chance you get all game. Read the Kesler Player's Tribune article; you wear on people by just thumping them repeatedly. If it sounds silly, well, sorry, but it does happen in all sports and at many levels. If I know I can make your life harder in a professional sport--one especially where there's so much parity and little margin for error--I'm gonna do it.

A simple slash when the refs aren't looking, is enough to take out a player, if he has a lingering injury in the same area.

I will never forgot J-Dub's gutsy play, when he was playing with dislocated shoulder vs the Sharks in the playoff's.

The Sharks went after him every chance they got, J-Dub ended up being one of the better players that series. Kopitar was also out.
