After being snake bit to start the 2015-16 season with the American Hockey League's Ontario Reign, the AHL affliate of the Los Angeles Kings, right wing prospect Jonny Brodzinski found a groove. But that ended rather abruptly when an injury forced him out of the 2016 Calder Cup Playoffs during the first round.

But this fifth round draft pick seems to ooze sklll and potential and in a couple of years. he just might be seeing top six minutes for the Kings.

LA Kings RW Prospect Jonny Brodzinski “Scores Goals That Other People Can’t”

Nice article. Brods is the real deal, IMO. He could find the groove just like Toffoli did. He is a sniper for sure.

Thanks for the great article. With continued progress, seems like he could be be a 3rd line candidate in 2 years. I wouldn't be shocked to see him get a callup this year.

To me he has one of the best pure shots in the organization, behind Carter, Gaborik and Toffoli. Big year coming up for him. When he doesn't try and be too fine with his shot placement, he is very effective. Took him half the season, and a lot of posts, but he figured it out. We had no chance in the playoffs once he was injured.

I am still skeptical, I think he ends up as one of those guys who scores a decent amount in the minors but not enough at the NHL level to make up for his shortcomings. It's hard for one-dimensional players to make it in the NHL unless they really score a lot.

It's hard not to think that way with so few scorers developed in our system. But, he doesn't have that size disadvantage of guys like Kozun, O'Neill, and so on have. And, he's quite a smart player by all accounts, and listens and learns.

It's going to be about his will to go to those prime areas where you can get clobbered, and how much he dedicates himself to his complete game. He's not putting up numbers like Toffoli did, but has a lot in common with him as far as attitude goes. Once he got out of that slump in the beginning of the year he was pretty impressive, so if he continues his strong play out of the gates his confidence will build quickly.

Kings didn't develop many scorers because between 2006 and 2011 the Kings had six first round picks and used one of them on what would be considered a scoring player (sadly this is the year we really should have gone D).

We will see on Brodzinski, but it's just tough because he is pretty old for a prospect. He is probably going to have to really have a nice year and get called up or win a spot next season or the window is probably done with the Kings.

Lord knows we could use the scoring help, but the Kings have been reluctant with one-dimensional scorers.

Brodz has those type of hands in close that he can roof a shot, even from right on the doorstep. In fact, seemed to be his trademark and where he scored most of his goals watching him all season. Hit about 10+ posts/crossbars before his first goal went in, and that is not an exaggeration. He plays a pretty decent overall game, no one particular weakness that sticks out. He is competitive, and learned to play a sold two-way game in his first pro year. Most games he was more effective overall than Kempe.

So Jared Bednar gets named the new head coach of the Colorado Avalanche after winning the Calder Cup as the coach of the Lake Erie Monsters. We know the Monsters swept the Reign, who had dominated the Western Conference during the regular season. But the Reign was without scorer Jonny Brodzinski during the Monsters series and didn't have a lot of scoring talent as it was, so the loss of Brodzinski really hurt. If Jonny had been healthy and playing (and the Reign had been playing in sync like they almost always do,) could the defending champion Reign have pulled out the series? Then Bednar wouldn't have won the Calder Cup and would he be the new Avs coach today?

For want of a nail.
