Still say this is a mistake. Bartosak has absolutely NOTHING left to prove at the WHL level. No idea why Quick-Scrivens, Jones-Berube, Bartosak doesn't work? Better for Bartosak to battle for playing time at ECHL level with Jets prospect Olkinuora then to head back to Red Deer and get complacent due to the fact he is beyond that level.
Don't say Niederberger is an impedement, Niederberger is the same age as Bartosak and quite simply not as good (also not Kings property). Why would he be gifted a spot in Manchester when the better player and prospect in Bartosak has to return to junior?
Great read, Gann.
I think it's the right move to send him back to Red Deer for his over-age season. Let him work on his fitness level (especially) and, as you pointed out in your article, rebound control.
Hopefully, if Jones' development is on track, he'll be backing up Quick next year and hand the reins over to Bartosak.
It's because Bartosak's liked more that Niederberger is gifted a spot in Manchester. Jones will be getting the majority of the games in the AHL, meaning whomever is backing him up won't get much time to play/develop.
If Bartosak was in Ontario, as you said, he would be battling a prospect and thus not getting much time.
Playing in the WHL isn't about "proving" anything. The article states he needs to refine his technique and work on his fitness, and they don't want to overwhelm him in every facet. Giving him time in the WHL to work on his fitness, and also letting him get used to a more refined technique with the same difficulty of shooters isn't a bad thing.
This guy was ghe best g in the chl last year. If pro hockey overwhelms him then he would have been a bust anyways.
Playing at lower levels below the players skill level issa sure way to develop bad habits. He is going to face the EXACT same challenges with regards to playing time next year. It is doing no good burying him to develop bad habits before he gets a chance.
I'd agree with you guys if he was 18. Hes 20. This is equivalent of sending pearson back last year. Instead his was a rookie of the year candidate in AHL this year.
Just an FYI, just because the players in the ECHL are older than the ones in Juniors for the most part, doesn't make it a better league. Remember these are the players that aren't good enough to make the AHL or NHL, and too old to play in the CHL. I'd rather watch the CHL than ECHL any day.

Keep in mind that he really played just one full year in the WHL prior to last season. He was injured for most of his first year.
Also, he was still in Europe at 16 and 17 years of age, while his Canadian peers were already in major junior hockey.
Returning for another year in the WHL is the best thing for him. He'll play a ton as opposed to riding the pine in Manchester or Ontario. He won't develop much at all by sitting and watching.
Why is playing in Europe so bad, other than being further away from amateur scouts here on HF Kings and HF boards? He was playing and more importantly practicing lots over there, learning the game of hockey. As you all like to say, he was getting LOTS of minutes in Europe.
He was one of the top rookies, if not the top rookie G in 10-11 in Red Deer despite the season ending shouder injury. TBH I was completely flabbergasted how scouts pasted on him in 2011 draft.
Why do people assume he would be riding the pine in Ontario or Manchester. This guy was easily (IMO) the best goalie in the CHL last year. Would he be in for a fight with either Jones in Manchester or Olkinoura in Ontario? Obviously. How would that hinder him? Instead of being not challenged and dominating junior hockey again where he will get lax and deveop bad easy habits, he would have to fight and claw his way in the pro ranks, as he will have to ANYWAYS next season! He has the talent and drive to steal and retain the starting job in either Manchester or Ontario, IMO. Hell worst case scenario is that he only gets 15-20 starts in Manchester, then is COMPLETELY ready to take over starter role in 14-15 from Jones with no questions asked.
