Wow, Blake talks him up quite a bit. I'm a bit more cautious in my optimism but Mersch does bring an area of expertise that I feel the Kings haven't had a true talent in since the Smyth/Handzus days and that is as a net front presence that can redirect pucks and clean up the garbage, especially on the power play. Gonna be interesting to see if he can build on his remarkable second half and playoff numbers.

just another reason why, in my opinion, kyle clifford is expendable. love cliffy as a player, but he hurts the pro roster (besides the 10 games a year he plays great)

Very good article, Gann! I'm very excited about Mersch.

Will we see a part 2? :P j/k

I think you're both overstating the value of our 4th line LW slot and understating Clifford's actual abilities. You should look at 4th lines around the league and realize that Clifford is actually a damn good player. I'm not so sure Mersch makes him replaceable as it seems like he's the kind of player who needs to play with talent to use his offensive skillset (i.e. Dwight King) whereas Clifford plays his banging role to a T and has speed and decent puck protection to go with it (can't knock Cliffy's skating, that's for sure).

That being said wow, those are some big words from Blake, very high praise, they seem incredibly high on him. They've had extremely high praise for Mersch, Weal, and to a lesser extent O'Neill, makes me wonder what their plans are!

I there a player that Blake hasn't praised?

when Mersch is 100% ready to move to the NHL, D King is gone. frankly i thought Dean may have moved him at the draft this summer as a cap saving move. take a chance on Mersch in the short term to save some cap and speed him along.

Mersch will give them the same capability of moving up when needed (injuries) and provide a better asset on the PP than King has ever provided.

all the U of W Badger games i watched, he never stood out as a guy that will take the body and be known as a banger. perhaps this has changed since the move to MAN. like King he uses his body to protect the puck and make space. i never truly saw him using his size as a physical threat on the ice.

comparing Clifford to King or Mersch isn't comparing apples to apples. i agree, he plays a different game compared to both of those guys.

i love what the Colonel brings, he leaves it all on the ice. my only concern is his fighting, or lack of skill. its an akward style and i am still waiting for him to take a major hit leading to a serious concussion. other than that the guy is black and white - you know what he is going to bring every shift. i would like to see him regularly top 20pts for a season, but in Sutter's system that will be difficult to achieve for a 4th liner.

there are different types of 4th lines you can have. I wasnt saying Mersch is ready for the NHL, either. In my opinion, Clifford's spot on the roster could be utilized much mre effectively, regardless of what line he is on. Just my opinion though! I am not GM so dont worry :p

You don't move your 5th best ES goal scorer last season for a rookie who has not played a single NHL game.

King has been a better ES scorer than Dustin Brown over the past two years.

Dwight King is also cheap. The Kings need more players like Dwight King in the bottom six, not less. Mersch will be worked into the lineup slowly ie (Shore,Andy,Weal) ETC. Until he proves he can replace an NHL roster player.

Those were my thoughts earlier but read it. He's insanely high on him, but I agree, where are all our crappy players

It's pretty easy to tell when Blake is higher on a particular player than another, but I have the advantage of speaking to him, which makes it easier...

Does his nose twitch like Samantha from Bewitched?
