He didn't figure in the scoring in the Los Angeles Kings 2-0 win over the Philadelphia Flyers on October 5, the Kings' 2017-18 season opener, but it was a special game for forward Alex Iafallo, who made a very solid NHL debut that night.

Regardless of whether he was involved in the scoring, Iafallo's NHL debut story wasn't what one might normally expect.

Read all about it at...

Good article as always! I'm a little confused, and maybe it's because it's early in the morning... but how was it not the typical NHL debut story? He didn't score, parents flew in, he had texts from friends. Isn't that how most debut stories for rookies are? I hope I'm not coming across as snarky. Maybe it's because I was expecting some statistical anomaly or something.

It's spelled out in the story...it's subtle, but it's there.

Good article, Gann. He seems like a humble guy, which is in stark contrast to his tenacious attitude on the ice. Love his game so far.

Nice article, but I don't get it either. Was he a better interview for you then most players? He seems gracious and a good teammate.

You could always explain what you mean instead of being rude to someone who complimented your article.

I had no intention of being rude. I felt that since even he mentioned the early hour, and that he might need to re-read the story, that he should do so. I felt the angle, while subtle, was fairly obvious.

I would've re-read it, but that's me. I'm sorry for the misunderstanding.

Anyway, the angle was that Iafallo didn't handle things the way the vast majority of young players making their NHL debut would, in terms of talking about it with the media. He talked about everything else, other than how the game was for him—what his feelings about himself were. Instead, he focused on his teammates, his line mates, what he has to do to get better (and remain on the Kings roster)...stuff like that. Only when pressed a little did he open up about himself.

If that didn't come across at all to most readers, then I failed, in terms of covering that angle. Perhaps I left too much to the reader to think about, in this case. I usually do this because I feel that it's generally better to encourage readers to think as deeply as possible about the subject...I think that usually makes for a better story.

I gotta say, I've never heard a player mention how good the anthem singer was after his first game. He's obviously a very heady guy, and pays attention to his surroundings and takes it all in. The great vision he exhibits on the ice makes a little more sense now.
