Player Discussion Kyle Burroughs

  • Xenforo Cloud upgraded our forum to XenForo version 2.3.4. This update has created styling issues to our current templates, this is just a temporary look. We will continue to work on clearing up these issues for the next few days and restore the site to it's more familiar look, but please report any other issues you may experience so we can look into. Thanks for your patience and understanding.
I have no take on Burroughs, but I have been wondering whether, generally speaking, players who fit his scouting profile represent potential value: that is, defensemen who are good defensively but who don't look like the typical big, rugged, defensive guy who can "break up the cycle." I suppose I'm thinking of the Chris Tanev model.

So, I'm cheering for Burroughs to surprise, make it to the big club, and show that I'm on to something

It seems that I've been replying to my own posts more and more frequently. It's so sad.

A variety of posters have had mildly positive observations about Burroughs over the past few days. Was it a sign that the organization also is starting to view him as an option when they played him with Juolevi against Calgary? Or is being paired with Juolevi a sign of the opposite: you're so bad, buddy, that this is who you get anchored to before we demote you.

Will Burroughs start with the big club if Hamonic isn't here? Can he kill penalties?

Is he Tanev light?

I think Burrough is going to be the 6th/7th Defenseman if Hamonic doesnt return before the season

Hughes Myers
OEL Poolman
Juolevi/Hunt Burroughs

I don't think he's been better than Hunt or Juolevi, probably not really better than Rathbone or even Schenn tbh. But he has shown reasonably well and can probably handle depth minutes as well as Sautner or Brisbois.

I would hope Green would go with a clearly better LH option over the inferior RH choice, but that's TBD at this point. But Burroughs is definitely pushing Schenn for next right up at this point, and might come down to who is out of the lineup (if a PUERTO is needed, Schenn probably still next up).

He’s been a pleasant surprise to me throughout camp. Not enough to leapfrog the guys in front of him to start the season - but I definitely think he will get some games in when we run into our usual injury troubles.

Definitely put himself on the radar for an early callup from Abbotsford if the Canucks run into injuries on the blueline....and this is almost guaranteed to happen during a long season. Should be a top-pairing guy for the Abby Canucks.

He looks a hell of a lot better than Schenn but there is basically zero chance the organization keeps him on the roster over Schenn because this team is the exact opposite of a meritocracy.

I think the Canucks under Benning have routinely allowed guys to play their way onto the team. Who were the glaring cuts that you could remember? Guys who clearly deserved to make the team but didn’t. Not talking about career AHL players narrowly outplaying a prospect that requires waivers but was sent down.

Honestly from what I've seen in pre-season, when healthy, Keeper and Borroughs are both above Schenn on the depth chart imho. No doubt Schenn will make the team and remain on the team over both, but I'm more comfortable with both those guys playing in a #8 role over Schenn

I mean, really?

You've had guys like Sutter and Gudbranson who have consistently been played way above their station based on veteran status instead of results.

You have guys like Vey/Pouliot/Granlund/Schaller/Sbisa who have been welded onto the roster ahead of better players solely because the organization was trying to pump their acquisition (and all given huge raises by this GM) and then immediately out of the NHL. The hapless Granlund got injured one year, had his roster spot taken by Darren Archibald for 30 games who was better at absolutely everything ... and then Archibald got 1 preseason game the next year as they rushed to give the spot back to Granlund.

Holtby was for some reason the opening day starter last year ahead of Demko.

Basically nobody who wasn't a name drafted prospect has been given a chance to play themselves up from the minors as a system guy. Biega was probably the closest and he was still constantly benched in favour of players who are worse than him.

I mean, I can remember arguing til I was blue in the face (and getting mocked for it) that Tanner Kero was a better player than Markus Granlund.

Lo and behold, the useless lazy shitpile Granlund instantly flushes out of the NHL the instant he leaves Vancouver while Kero manages to work his way into being an effective regular for Dallas last year.

Schenn is a gamer, takes a while for vets to get rolling, he was a key piece as a 6/7 on a Stanley Cup champion playing solid minutes when called upon, good physical Dman that plays a simple, effective game. We have a tendency to over analyze players in Pre-season, real scouting begins in November.

He was mostly a healthy scratch in TB playing like 9 easy minutes/game when he got into the lineup. He was the furthest thing from a 'key piece'.

Who should have?

Brendan Gaunce played two full seasons in Utica, then parts of 4 seasons with the Canucks under Benning in which he scored 6 goals in 115 games, then washed out of the league. Guillaume Brisbois has had two cups of coffee and has been invisible. Same with Alexandre Grenier. Jalen Chatfield made the team last season after three seasons in Utica. Frank Corrado came up repeatedly over the course of two full seasons in Utica and wasn't very good. These players just aren't useful. Every one of them no longer with the organization is also no longer in the league, and nor is Darren Archibald. The reality is that Brendan Sutter is better than them, and is probably better than Zack MacEwan. Which Utica players over the last 5-6 years do you think ought to have made the team?

That's a really long-winded way of saying you can't name one.

Motte played himself onto the roster, btw.

LOL.

I just named about 10 guys who were ridiculously played too high on the roster in spite of terrible play as well as several who were held back. Biega, Archibald, Gaunce, Kero, Taylor Fedun was another who outplayed Bartkowski/Sbisa types in preseason and never got any real look.

Motte walked straight into the lineup as a regular 2 days after we traded for him. He was sent down for the AHL playoffs at the conclusion of that NHL season but otherwise has never missed a game on the Canucks roster.

That's the most hilarious list of shitty players you think were 'held back'.

They weren't held back they were just never good enough.
