Even if it's the case that they can win without him, the price won't go lower because of it.

Isles won’t like the cost at all.
Prob won’t pay up.
Kuz has 40 goal potential and is only a 5mill co tract for this and next year.
Pretty unlikely that he ever replicates what he did last season. He scored with a 27.5% shooting accuracy. He certainly won't do it on a defensively minded club like the Islanders. Any team that pays a premium to get him is going to be disappointed

Bad concept, and somehow a worse offer so far.

Not for sale, there was a window before last season for teams to make their case for Kuzmenko to join they're team. He chose us, we handed him a meatier contract, and we're not about to trade him for what I presume was scraped off the bottom of players shoes after walking into the rink.

You may as well simply assume that he's not available at all. What it would cost to move Kuzmenko...just wouldn't be worth it for anyone else.

He's just too valuable to the Canucks as a 30G+ finisher who has great chemistry with Pettersson, on a very reasonable $5M contract that they desperately need, as tight to the cap as they are, and will continue to be next year.

He's basically a one-trick pony. He's insanely good around the net. Terrific timing to spin off or break loose at just the right moment and great hand-eye to get his hands on tips, tap-ins, redirects, and a decent enough shot and set of hands to finish from the slot or extend plays in traffic. But that's about it. He doesn't offer a ton in the rest of the game, other than being very much on the same page as Pettersson in terms of offensive zone play and entries. They read off each other very well.

But Kuzmenko isn't the sort of "complete" winger teams would be willing to, or even should be willing to sell the farm for. He's worth far more to Vancouver than anyone else, because of that chemistry with Pettersson.

What the Canucks really need...is the right fit as the "3rd wheel" with Pettersson and Kuzmenko. Someone with size, speed, and that mentality to do the spadework on the forecheck, in the corners...but enough skill and vision to mesh with the clever, high skill game that the other two play together. Not to get rid of Kuzmenko.

Sounds like Matt Moulson scoring 30+ with Tavares. Never cracked 15 without him.

I don't know if Kuzmenko is that limited. But it's probably a similar-ish situation. Where, what he's worth as that with the Canucks...isn't likely to be a price other teams are willing to pay. There's way too much potential "buyer beware". We know he's a potential 30-40G scorer with Pettersson. Nobody really knows what he is without him. :dunno:

Not to mention, it'd be a terrible look on the Canucks anyway, after "winning" a big FA competition to land the guy...then signing him, and trading him away. Would be hugely shooting themselves in the foot when it comes to Russian UFAs in particular. As well as souring an important relationship with an agent who is relevant to other Canucks interests.

All just adds up to, "not worth it".

He isn't a one trick pony when it comes to offense, he can shoot, he can tip, he can pass, he can skate, he can stickhandle, he can force defenders to get penalties, his hands are magic. He doesn't love to play defense, but he has a lot of tools to score points. It's just NHL coaches love strict systems where players like Kuzmenko don't feel themselves very comfortable. Tocchet is definitely one of the coaches that value their systems above all.

Islanders have problems with offense so they will need Kuzmenko to go forward and score, they have very competent defense and goalies to force an offensively gifted forward to play defense.

Kuz is a huge part of the EP line. He's the strongest skater, best puck protector, can hold the cycle and is creative af around the net. He can also beat goalies clean, which our other wingers really lack at.

How much of a gulf between Kuzmenko and Dobson?

Dobson for Kuzmenko, 2023 unprotected 1st.
If you’re moving Kuzmenko the only guy on the isles that would make the most sense to ask for is Dobson. That wouldn’t make sense form an islanders perspective.

you must not be familiar with Dobson. That’s ok though.

It's no just Dobson. I'm pretty sure Vancouver won't mind Pulock.
