Agreed...and what would make the next few months really interesting is if the Pens start slipping in the standings. ;)
I am hoping for their demise…. And maybe EK65 gets too drunk at their Christmas Party….. that always works out well for us.

Shut up.

Kucherov makes that half deke all the time, wasn’t a flub.
OK Tampa Kucherov fan. Imagine being offended because somebody on an Oilers board is critiquing the Lightning. I wouldn't know if Kuch just leaves the puck go lots on his breakaways. Considering Skinner, and that a wrap would certainly have been a goal, it was a poor choice. you might pull that against a goalie that is quick moving, but on Skinner, on a breakaway you deke, tuck.

Don’t want to get in the middle of something. But I thought Kucherov did the phantom deke move on Skinner before already. Why wouldn’t he try it again. I know I’ve seen that move once or twice.

LOL...I hear you.
I was actually pushing for this very thing last season.
I think there is a fit assuming the cost/cap hit was low enough.

He probably should know at this point that 97 can do remarkable things in remarkably little time, fair.

I also just think it's hilarious that that goal call will always have the Glendening stat adorned to it.
It was so important to know that he was the only right hand shot on Detroit for 2 years

I can't see the post you are replying to but if anyone thinks that move by Kucherov wasn't intentional they haven't watched him throughout his career. It's one of his signature moves.

The only posters who dont want to admit it was likely intentional are the same posters who would rather stand on Jasper Ave naked at -40 in January than admit Skinner made a good save.

Lol. Nice so you can see the potential. I think too when EK65 was on offer as a Shark I thought about it and considered it. Watched his games there for sure.

Ultimately EK65 probably is a pipe dream. And I’m day dreaming here. But the fact that Pens fans want him gone, he grades out analytically poor, and has a poor defensive reputation plus the Pens being a tire fire. Thats why I wonder if we can squeeze him out of there. We also know EK65 wants to be on a contender, so he might push Dubas in a direction too.

Case by case basis. Some goalies that would work because they buy the deke and are quick moving. Skinner was set, and wasn' going to be moving, and the tuck was there. If Kuch just completes the play he scores. I could see it being successful sometimes. Seems like kind of a jerk play to pull, on purpose, and I never said he didn't do it on purpose. Was the wrong play in the instance. he had skinner.

Lol Holtby losing it. Drives goalies nuts getting beat by a move like that, it takes advantage of pretty standard goaltending technique and it’s so simple but difficult to execute.

Maybe. But if one of the most skilled players in the League had Skinner on a dead to rights breakaway. Can’t really fault Skinner there. That’s a breakdown on our D. Same as the breakdown that sent McD flying in alone that we wouldn’t fault Vasi for.

Skinner is set pads down. he's committed. the tuck far side was there. Kuch was moving full speed and Skinner wouldn't get to it. Was an error and Kuch probably not being too familiar specifically with Skinner.

You could be right, I’ve really only watched it once. But a breakaway is a breakaway. And if I’m finding blame on that sequence, it falls on the breakdown that created the breakaway in the first place. Different discussion than whether that goal goes in or not though.

There it is. The Kuch. Lol.

I've posted on EK65 a bit. Where I would be curious about him is with the PP puck transportation which is solely McDavid at mach 5 with opposition extending their coverage to impede his speed and o-zone penetration angling him to the boards. I could imagine a dual carry option with McDavid and EK65 mitigating their stack defending against a sole carrier. And to have EK65 as a lethal left flank right shot option in place of Nugent Hopkins - a d-man with elite puck poise and a wicked shot receiving those feeds from left handed elites. Imagine Bouchard top of umbrella with his elite kill shot and distributor ability with EK65 on the flank to shoot, distribute, or penetrate all while McDavid in zone carrying at elite speed and scanning for openings.

The Oil team defending structure is likely strong enough to withstand some own zone hiccups and with Knoblauch's good work with defense deployment and usage they could still default to Nurse Kulak in critical defending situations. I'm intrigued by the elite processor, elite offensive skills and skating. Would be a true weapon that would create time and space for this team's super elites. Pens are a disaster. This trade was a disaster. Squinting potentially see a cap dump deal with retention. EK65 had an incredible seeing eye PP assist tonight.

Kulak's stellar play and ability to absorb 3+ min toi gives this team potential flexibility to get a 2RD or 2LD who can play right side. This will be a competitive market so we'll see how Jackson Bowman ultimately approach it. Within the last year, this organization has done deals with Anaheim, Philly, and Montreal who each have viable options.

EK65 is a zone entry MACHINE. He can navigate with speed into the o-zone at an elite level. And once he gets in there, he can find options quickly. The rumors of his demise are overblown, he can and does still fly out there. I hadn’t considered him on PP1 just cause the Oilers likely stick with the same unit. He’s also a bit of an alpha QB, likes to hold the puck and look for the options on his own. So that may not mesh well with McD, and you’d like McD to be the main puck carrier and QB. That said, I have very little doubt that EK65 can integrate into any offensive system. He’s too smart, he has too much ability not to be able to adjust.

Yes I feel the same way. Knob hockey defence can withstand any warts of EK65’s defence. It did with Ceci for the most part. It’s doing it with primarily 3rd pair guys like Emberson and Stech. I just can’t see EK65 with his ability do any worse defensively than these guys. Our team D can cover for it.

Where I’d like to see him is driving play from the 2nd pair. To drive play and chance creation for the lines 2-4 at even strength. It’s probably a bit of a luxury if we don’t want to use EK65 as the PP option, but it could have cascading effects on the line up. Every lines offence can take an uptick with his skill and vision out there.

I think the PP has gone stale. Heavily scouted and teams are much more aggressive in their kill extending into neutral zone and beyond to mitigate McDavid carry with speed; greater pressure on Bouchard to take away time and space; sticks in lanes to reduce cross ice Draisaitl kill shot. I think you could run Bouchard at top of umbrella and EK65 as a lethal flank option with Nugent Hopkins role enhanced with elite right shot finishing ability. Still have McDavid as the elite speed disruptor and puck possession driver.

But agree huge value add as an EV ice machine to drive efficient zone exits and penetration attack option with Lines 2-3. Nurse does the hard area defending with EK65 moving the puck quickly and efficiently the other way via his great passing or transportation.

Well can’t argue with the numbers. It has gone stale. I really haven’t thought about the PP1 in detail, cause I assume it’s something that won’t change and will figure itself out like it has these last few years. That said, we saw the PP introduce brand new plays in the playoffs to break through and surprise teams. And adding EK65 would be a brand new look that definitely has high potential to work. I know EK65s vision and ability will be up to the task. Interesting ideas here with the layout.

The Nurse-EK65 could have really good synergy. Nurse handles all the hard defending, net clearing, cycle busting. EK65 handles all the puck moving with his elite vision and decision making. And QBs 5v5 possession. They kind of cover for each others weaknesses. Of course the divy of responsibilities isn’t cut and dry like this, right down the middle, but they could really gel if you consider their strengths and weaknesses. Would also be interesting to see what type of D-man EK65 has had the most success with historically.

Marc Méthot.

So basically a defense only version of Ekholm.

Whole team is bought in on playing a solid 2-way game, even Jeff Skinner. Not a finished product yet, but this looks like a mature playoff ready team the way they're playing. Excited to see it with another addition on the backend and Arvidsson, Kane, and maybe Philp in the line up by season end. Will be really nice when Ryan and hopefully Perry are press box/injury fill guys instead of regulars. Perry hasn't been bad, but I think there are better options than him when this team's healthy because he doesn't PK and his foot speed can sometimes leave openings defensively on the counter attack when a puck gets turned over.

Makes a ton of sense. EK65 loves the puck on his stick and is always looking to create. A defence first partner, let’s him focus on what hes best at. Nurse sounds like more of a 2 way guy compared to Methot though but with how fluid and 5-man-involved todays offense is, it could still work well imo.

I Don't think Tampa had more than 3 good opportunities all game. Was a quiet night. I mean 18 shots and some of them dump ins. Skinner created the tampa goal on a dump in. Then 8 secs left losing the puck behind him. jebus. A goalie can't let that puck get over him with just secs left. Didn't like that play.

Oilers are playing airtight giving up practically nothing. When Tamps had some looks they were shooting wide. When Kuch had the breakaway he flubbed it. The deflection his Skinner where he was. Skinner is big, thats his big skillset. heh
The Oilers were great all night defensively, but there's no way you're blaming Skinner for a Bouchard turnover on the TB goal and there's certainly no way you're trying to criticize him for making a point blank grade A save off Hagel because the puck went 3 feet over the net and got high sticked down.

There's nights to shit all over Skinner and tonight definitely isn't one of them.

I like what Kapanen has brought as well. Speedy guy but also doing the little things that don't show on the scoresheet. Him playing good defensive hockey with his stick or blocking shots is always nice to see. Fans appreciated his huge block this game too. Not sure how the team will look once Kaner and Arvy are both back, but I think there should be a spot for him on the team also.
He's hit a few crossbars on absolute rockets as well. Looks like a guy who can add some speed and chip in a bit of offence off the rush in the bottom 6 when Kane and Arvidsson are back.

If you don't think Stuart Skinner's play is a significant part of why they won last night, then you're just being a dickhead, frankly. He was excellent and made a number of quality saves.
