I like what Kapanen has brought as well. Speedy guy but also doing the little things that don't show on the scoresheet. Him playing good defensive hockey with his stick or blocking shots is always nice to see. Fans appreciated his huge block this game too. Not sure how the team will look once Kaner and Arvy are both back, but I think there should be a spot for him on the team also.
Kapanen has been playing great from the start. But his defensive game he's playing right now an even better sign. The guy can cycle, play with skill, is defending very well, and he has a no duster howitzer. From range he's challenging goalies. He has a couple posts here as well as scoring. His play on the goal credited to Drai is what pressured that play. He really zips around well but meaningfully. Good player. Right now he's a better option in that slot than Arvid would be.

The Tampa Kucherovs sure aren't impressive. I do think the Oilers hung back in third, would've wanted them to pursue more but heres the deal. With 4mins left in game Tampa only had 18shots despite trailing all the game. Seemed like Tampa tried to kick some energy with goalie pulled but that was a middling performance. If you even noticed Point or that other guy Hagel today other than the last scramble let me know when they got anything done.

Again I'm disgusted that in 2024 old Brandon Point is on team Canada (he's not good enough now) and that lol Hagel and Cirelli are on it too. One Oiler on team Canada. One. Hard to figure other than Cooper being a flat out homer. No Booch, No Hyman, No Nurse,, yeah right...Get outta town with your zero pts Cooper.
And here i thought Skinner stoned a lot of good TB opportunities!

And yeah ST. Louis is legitimately pissed about NO Bob Tom either.

Very mature, solid game by the Oilers. Stu has been outstanding lately.

To clarify the high stick, it’s not blown down immediately because just touching the puck with a high stick doesn’t call for an immediate whistle. If a Tampa player touched the puck after the high stick, then it gets blown down. No Tampa player touched the puck after the high stick.

In this case, it actually makes no difference if the puck was in the net or not. Nurse never had full possession of the puck so the “goal” doesn’t count. That’s why the review was so fast and why the ref announced that it was a high stick so there’s no goal. There’s no point in wasting time and reviewing whether the puck was in if it doesn’t matter. The quote from the rule book is below:

According to Rule 80.3, “When an attacking player causes the puck to enter the opponent's goal by contacting the puck above the height of the crossbar, either directly or deflected off any player or official, the goal shall not be allowed.”

So high stick puck + go off of Nurse or Skinner and in is still no goal. An Oiler would need to have full possession of the puck and then put it into their own net for it to count.

I rolled my eyes the moment I saw Colton fricken Parayko listed on the roster. Just reeks of nepotism because his GM is part of the management. Armstrong can eat shit. Would've made more sense for a player like Weegar to be there instead.

Skinner made a few outstanding saves. The glove save in the final moments wow! Hopefully he keeps it up.

Not often you see a team give up 4 clean breakaways in a night like Tampa did. Draisaitl and McDavid skating through the middle of the ice like they were against a peewee team.

I Don't think Tampa had more than 3 good opportunities all game. Was a quiet night. I mean 18 shots and some of them dump ins. Skinner created the tampa goal on a dump in. Then 8 secs left losing the puck behind him. jebus. A goalie can't let that puck get over him with just secs left. Didn't like that play.

Oilers are playing airtight giving up practically nothing. When Tamps had some looks they were shooting wide. When Kuch had the breakaway he flubbed it. The deflection his Skinner where he was. Skinner is big, thats his big skillset. heh

The boys just beat the 2nd highest scroing team in the League and they did it with solid defence (except maybe parts of the 2nd period), solid goaltending and the big play.
Skinner out deuled the best goalie in the NHL in this game. Good on him.
That (I beleive) was the first game this season where the Oilers won by scoring less than 3 goals.
Kapanen looked strong in this game. So did Ekholm.

I might be in the minority here but this is exactly the type of game I enjoy watching this team play.
This IMO was the closest we have seen yet to the playoff team from last season.
More of that please...bring it again against Minnesota on Thursday,

I keep mentioning its 2024 and not 2014. several of the Canada picks are curious in that the players are long past prime. I take Sidney on the club but Frankly Marchand again shows what a nothing leader he is in present day. Team getting blown out 8-1. He's only there because games being played in Boston. Brayden Point? Yawn. Fancy dancer. just take his body and he's nothing. Canada doesn't have 20 better players in 2024? yeah we do. Heavy nepotism with this lineup. its rionic too I have to look at ugly f***ing Marchand representing Canada just because Boston fans want to see him. I could give a f***. 10yrs ago he should be in. But no way he should now. he's like 90th in the scoring race.

Bouchard needs to stop doing stupid shit though, the rest of the team put on basically a defensive clinic and he made a bone headed turn over, as in the Toronto game we had given them basically nothing all game long until late in the 3rd he decided he wanted to go on an adventure like he's Bilbo Baggins.

You're a good player, but enough with that. Clean that shit up out of your game, especially completely unnecessary cross ice passes from out of our zone.

I love Bouch, but I fault him for the goal against personally. Just a lazy turnover. Anyways, hope Skinner keeps playing well in net.

I'll disagree with Point. The guy can straight up play and I personally think he'll be a good player for the roster. Parayko and Pietrangelo were my major eyerolls. In all honesty, I find it as a lame ass gimicky kind of tournament that won't even involve Russia's best players zzzz. Way to pump up the entertainment value lol. All I care about is our players not getting injured + it gives the rest of the team more time to rest. Nice to finally see Crosby on the same team as McDavid though at least as well.

Yeah, I agree with the bolded. Gonna have to play a lot like that for the playoffs. Especially if we run into teams like VGK for example.

They have played teams like Dallas and Toronto like this before, just the execution wasn't quite there, but you could see the same structure. But you lose those games in the 3rd and people act like this the whole game was a waste.

Best I’ve felt about the team all season. Last year I put the Cup on the Menu shortly after Knob took over. I’m not there yet, but I’m liking our chances after a disappointing off season (post offer sheets). I think if we get some of our Wingers find their game, and a perfect partner for Nurse. We’ll be well positioned for another long run.

Air tight indeed. Both natural Stat truck and money puck have the bolts with just 1.50 expected goals tonight.

We gave up basically nothing with just 7 HDCA which is astronomically low when the bolts average 12.8 a game.

Which is a good time to remind everyone - we've dominated this metric all year handily. Putting up HDCA numbers in line with Sutter's King's best.

I don't think small players move the dial in these tournaments. Point had definitely lost a step and he did nothing all night. the guy has 18G this season only because he has a fluke 37% shooting this season. Over twice what he usually has. I could see him getting nothing done against a team like the US. I think it comes down to Canada US and I don't like what we've selected for beating that side. All things equal pick some guys that can bruise and score. Id' even pick Marchment over some of these guys. Clearly anybody in Winnipeg top scoring better option as well.

Even the VGK game which is the only blight in this 7 game run, was a well played game. We got Top 6 wingers out the line up and some wingers just not feeling it yet. If that turns around, we take a huge step.

Yeah, I was in disbelief that Louie was all “BUT DID THE PUCK GO IN?!”, when it doesn’t matter because the high-stick kills the play entirely.

I agree and the best part is that there is plenty of room for a number of wingers to find their game.
If this team can ever get a balanced offence from their forwards...and still play high quality defence ...and get solid goaltending...look out.

Thanks. Exactly what I thought. Should remind people as well that the Kings team were winning lots of games scoring only 2 goals. Basically if they got to two they weren't losing. The D was that good and Quick was that good. Tampa look like first round outs once again. Not much with that team once teams start to play them heavy.

Defensively yeah I kinda feel like there are only two sets of people on the planet who could get that result.

And they're coincidentally about 130 KM apart in Alberta (Knoblaugh/Coffey and D. Sutter).

Can you imagine if we had like a star level goalie? We'd be the no.1 D in the league every year with metrics like that.

Point is only 28 years old and is coming off back to back 90+ point seasons and currently on pace for more than 100 right now. Only Pastrnak and Matthews have more goals than him in the entire league going back to the start of the 2022-2023 season.

I agree with you on Marchand. He shouldn't be there. But not having Point? That's crazy talk. He's a stone cold mortal lock.

The issue...while it paints an interesting picture the HDSC metric isnt close to being defintive.
