I'd be pretty surprised if he didn't win it.

Its not to say I think he's far and away been better than Bergeron or Toews this season, as I clearly haven't seen nearly as many Bruins/Hawks games as Kings games. But I think what LeBrun put in the end of his column is what gives Kopi the edge:

I feel like it's time to finally recognize Kopitar

The writers are the ones that vote on the award. We've all been harping on Kopitar being underrated for years, but now everybody seems to get it. Writers want to go against the grain a little bit, while still appealing to the masses. They want to pick the underdogs and then be proven right. So voting for Kopitar would be a "I knew it all along, now its his time" kind of move....even if they're all doing it at the same time. His performance in the Olympics (though technically irrelevant), the fact that the Selke is the least stat-based of all awards, the other two candidates already having won one, and his fantastic season all lead me to believe the writers want to vote for him.

That would be fantastic, we all know he deserves it. The part that worries me is all the votes being split in the west, while all the east votes going clearly just to Bergeron. Though he's had a down year, he picked up his production recently and should be fine for it too. Not to say Bergeron wouldn't deserve it either--but I think and hope this is Kopi's year.

Probably doesn't help our cause that Boston now has less GA than us :( There goes our Jennings. Now all the writers are pimping Chara for Norris, Rask for Vezina (and obv. Jennings), and Bergeron for Selke because Boston is the #1 defensive team in the league (sort of how Montreal had a great surprising year and now all of their players are the best--people were pimping PK for Norris, Price for Vezina, Plekanec for Selke).

It is really hard to make an argument against either Kopi or Bergeron. Now if they aren't one and two and someone else wins that's another story.
But would be nice to see Kopi get it.

Who is the Selke guy? And why should we take Kopi for him?

On a more serious note, the only reason that Kopi is in the discussion about the Selke is that Datsyuk has been hurt. The voters can't stay up and watch LA home games, so we don't exist to them.

I would be shocked if Bergeron doesn't win it, Kopitar should end up in the Top three this year.

Vote will probably end up:
1.Bergeron
2.Toews
3.Kopitar

If you ask me, the only reason East Coast writers are even talking about Kopitar; is Datsyuk has been hurt all year.

How has Bergeron been better this season?

Hockey writers be like "We can't watch Kopitar play, the Kings are too boring!"

How has Bergeron been better this season?

He doesn't have to be, He simply plays in the East, former winner, and plays on the Number 1 Defensive team in the league.

Again I would be shocked if Bergeron doesn't receive all the East Coast writers number one votes.

Kopitar would have to basically double up Bergeron or Toews for Takeaways/PK time/+- to receive any East coast votes.

Bergeron outproduces him 5v5, so the actual points are a little misleading. As I said earlier, they can now pump the "Boston #1 defensive team" thing, as well. My counterargument would be % of offense maybe or that the Bruins are by far a higher-scoring team, but eh. Both are dandies. Like I said, it's not that Bergeron is undeserving anyway, just would be nice to finally have some recognition for Kopitar too.

It's not just that. They can't be bothered to watch the west coast teams period.
When you look at all the rewards most are just going by the stat lines that are voted on by the hockey writers.
Hart- you score points
Calder- you either lead the league in rookie scoring or make a splash that get's talked about.
Norris- seems to be much more about points than D
Byng- don't take penalties
that leaves the Selkie and Clancy.
Clancy- off ice stuff
Selkie- in order to really determine this one you MUST watch the games and not look at the stat lines. The Norris should also but it has become only stat driven.
And in almost all the awards voted on by them if you play west of Chicago you are hurting. In both the Selie and Norris only 5 have been awarded in both these cases. And as far as playing in the Pacific time zone only one in both cases. The other awards aren't skewed like this but these two are.

To be honest I don't even care, but I do find it amusing that their job is to write about hockey yet many have blatantly stated that they don't follow the Western Conference.

I can't imagine a LEGIT hockey guy to admit that. Maybe they DON'T follow the WC, but to admit it outright would be career suicide.

I just want WC teams to win the Cup like 20 years in a row. Just keep shoving it down their throats.

And by that I'm cool with spreading it around. Love to see the Kings win every year, but let's get real, that doesn't happen due to injuries and age. I'm ok with St. Louis finally getting one, also San José, just as long as we get more. But just let's keep it in the West. **** those East Coast guys.

As far as Canada is concerned, . With the VAN and TOR gong shows going full blast right now, I'm amazed the hockey writers don't ignore the Canadian teams as well.

I personally think this is the best all around season Kopitar has had, he deserves the Selke but Bergeron or Toews will probably get it.

There's really no way to quantify who the best defensive forward is.

If Bergeron wins it, I couldn't say that he's undeserving.

How hard is it? Honestly. These journalists get paid to watch games. The "oh they're on too late" excuse is total ********. Record the games and watch them the next day. I just don't get it. Their entire job is based on watching games and then writing about them. Talk about a job where there should be zero excuses.
