I wanted to see what people think of cotton vs. polyester. I prefer Polyester because of the breathability.

i prefer cotton

tried out polyester socks not too long ago and hated it. it just felt weird and i didn't like how thin they felt compared to cotton socks

Honestly, I think it's just personal preference. I actually used to skate barefoot but I got tired of my skates smelling like cheese. Bauer makes a nice thin skate sock that I highly recommend.

Polyester all the way. I had only ever worn the cotton socks when I played in highschool. I got my first pair of polyester socks as a b-day gift from my wife and WOW they breath. They're light, fairly durable, look much better Imo, and your legs stay cooler. Im never going back.

I've never tried polyester.
my team always get's new cotton socks every year because by the end of the season my socks don't look like socks anymore lol

do polyester socks resist to tearing?

Not really. They don't hold up any better than the knit socks in my experience, but they're lighter, breath better and don't retain as much sweat or water.

I wouldn't pay $30+tax for the polyester socks like the Reebok ones sell for here in Canada, but you can get off brand versions for sale for close to the same price and sometimes cheaper than knit socks. Companies that make cheaper polyester socks include Kamazu, Hockeytron, Firstar...and those are only the first three that come to mind. Bauer also makes them now as they purchased Inara, but I imagine their prices are similar to Reebok's.

ok, i don't think i've seen cotton hockey socks

He meant the knit socks, but the CCM ones that I used to wear are actually 55% polyester, 45% cotton.
That said, I tried going back to knit socks after wearing edge socks a few games, and that's when I realized that I much prefer the coolness of the latter. So I'm totally sold on the Edge socks.

As far as the knit vs edge type socks, I don't really notice the difference. I wear which ever one matches the jersey I'm wearing .

Skate socks, I have a baseball sock that I recently found that I like. I also wore in the past soccer socks. They're a little thicker than skate socks but not too thick.

the new style socks are so much better. the rink i play in is rather warm and the old ones are unbearable after you skate with the new ones. old style looks cooler and thats it.

I switched from cotton to Polyester a few years ago once the Edge socks came out. No comparison. I don't use straps with my shins so it makes them fit a bit tighter to my leg and keeps everything from moving around, especially when blocking shots.

For the skate socks, the non-kevlar bauers do it for me. Although a buddy of mine used to go barefoot but it ruined his skates so he started wearing his wife's nylon socks and now swears by them.

As for hockey socks, edge all the way. When I was growing up they actually used to make edge style socks that had a wide mesh on them. Those were the best, but I haven't been able to find 'em since the 90s (anyone know what I'm talking about / seen these around lately? I'd snap em up in a second if I could find them again).

Actually, you are correct about the retail Edge socks, but the pro-stock edge sock are much more tear resistant than knit & retail. The only thing is that the pro-stck ones don't have the velcro attached & you'd have to sew some in yourself...

My pro stock edge socks stick to velcro even without the velcro tab so its no big deal.

Anyways I prefer pro stock edge socks to knit/retail edge socks. Way thicker, very hard to tear, etc.. My last pair of knit socks tore after a season of beer league.. just brutal.

The best part is you can usually find pro-stock returns or used, for about the price of knit socks at team equipment sales....

They were $2 per pair at the Vancouver Giants (WHL) sale :).

The Reebok edge socks are much better IMO. Lighter, more durable, they don't soak up like a sponge. It's also easier to attach to your jockstrap, and looks much better.

I just bought a pair today.

The pro stock edge socks are my absolute favorite. They're tough as nails, and don't have Velcro to get in the way. My retail edge socks have been almost as durable. They hold up against cuts and holes as well as the pro stocks, but are piling badly where my knee brace rubs against my shin pads during crossovers. I had the edge socks from the beginning and never feel like my knit socks fit right.

I also have a pair of the hockeytron edge style socks that are great (very similar in durability to the pro stock edge socks, but significantly cheaper) except they're very small in the thigh. I swear they're narrower in the thigh than they are in the calf.
