I was just going to see if anyone here could tell me a little about this or anyone has had a similar injury. I have torn my meniscus and done cartilage damage in my other knee and this does not feel the same. Well, at Monday's skate I was down on my right knee and somehow a shot found its way through and hit the inside of my right knee, it seems like the puck hit the left side of the knee cap and the bone. It was the most instant pain I had ever felt, I would compare it to a very, very intense blow to the funny bone. I hobbled up and skated to the bench, at first I couldn't put much weight on it but after a few minutes it was just sore and I finished practice. Obviously, there is a large and dark bruise and there was some pretty significant swelling in the area the puck made impact. Tuesday, I felt like I had a weak knee and it ached as expected. Wednesday, my knee felt less stable and I could feel and hear cracking noises when flexed, along with the ache. Thursday, it felt more stable but not 100 percent and now there is a dull pop when I extend and retract my leg. I don't fully trust my knee right now but it hasn't given out. It is still sore and it is still swollen, but less and less everyday. I can feel a pop with my finger on the lower, right section of the knee. I have been keeping up with icing it about 15 minutes every hour, keep it elevated when resting, and trying to stay off it as much as possible (I haven't skated since). I'm not comfortable skating on it, I am also a bowler and I've bowled Tuesday and Thursday, it has not affected that.

Sorry my description is long, I am hoping any of you nice guys could share any knowledge or experienced something similar. Mainly, should I wait and see what happens until the bruising is gone and the pain goes away, or should I see somebody soon?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Not being a doctor:

Id see someone as soon as you can. the more you irritate it, the worse itll be. I separated my shoulder as a kid playing roller hockey, got it diagnosed, but never got it taken care of, and its always bothered me since. Be safe, get it checked out.

Right on. I have also separated my shoulder, shoulders. One hockey, one snowboarding. Never had them properly taken care of. The right one is fine. But my left one gives me sharp pains every now and then for no reason and is uncomfortable to sleep on my left side for a length of time.

I dont get the sharp pains, I get general discomfort. I cant really wear a bag (backpack/duffel bag) without there being a dull achy pain. It almost feels like im a preteen getting growing pains again. I try to not sleep on it, but left shoulder down is the most comfortable. Im supposed to get it checked out again soon.

Personally I would go get it checked out as soon as possible. You only get one set of knees and you have to take care of them.

My first knee surgery was a ACL reconstruction and meniscus repair the cartilage tear was large enough that they stitched it back together. Wasn't a fun recovery, I was out of sports for about a year.

This November I had another meniscus repair, on the same knee. After the surgery I spent six weeks on crutches where I wasn't allowed to put any weight on it. Another six weeks of physio, and I was back to hockey. Still not 100% but i expect it will never feel the same as it was before my surgeries.

Because I am still under 30 and active my doctor chose to repair the cartilage rather than take it out. Next time they will take it out because the chances of it healing a third time are pretty low. The other thing to consider is if the cartilage is torn it can become jagged and rough up the bones and everything else around it and make your life miserable. I will probably have arthritis by the time i am 40, but I still have full use of my legs so I can't complain.

The medical system in Canada is a little different then where you are so I don't really know what would be the best approach for you. But I would recommend going to a hospital with an orthopedic surgeon on staff so there is a better chance of getting your problem dealt with rather than a referral to a different doctor at a different hospital.

Get checked out. I played 2-3 weeks on a sprained PCL by the time I got it looked at it had healed.....weakly. Since then, it hasnt felt 100 percent and its probably been almost 2 years. Im start to get more confident in it though.

Thanks for the responses guys. I wouldn't have been worried about it if it wasn't for the popping sound on the opposite side of the injured knee. I wanted to be playing next week and that was why I was a little bit hesitant to go right away, I was hoping it would just heal and not be a problem. The university has a good a health center and I'm covered through the school's insurance, so I am for sure getting it looked at. I just can't believe an innocent little shot somehow hit an exposed weak spot through my shin guard while it was bent and is causing me this problem. A weak trip tore the meniscus in my other knee a few years ago, damn the luck

Anymore information out there? anyone know much about knee injuries?

Yes, my first name is Knee Pain!

When you get a knee problem like this, the first thing you want to do is elevate it and Ice it for 48 hours. After the swelling has gone down, then you need to add heat.

I recommend that you invest in a heating pad at Walmart. It cost about $30.00, but it's a live saver. Get the big one that you can wrap the whole knee in.

Then heat it up for about 20 mins and then take if off, allowing the knee to come back to room temperture, then add heat again for another 20 mins and so on.

The quicker you get heat to it the fast recovery time. Now, it after 4 days you still have problems (and you will, depending on how bad you messed it up) I recommend a doctor. You might need to go under the knife.

The last thing you want to do is mess with your knees. Anything else...ok. But not your knees. Well, that is if you want to be using a cane or a wheel chair the rest of your life. It's not so bad, you see guys on wheel chairs all the time on Cruise ships all the time, dragging their Oxygen tanks with them everywhere.

Yeah, go see a doctor!

not always. sometimes ice works better than heat. it all depends what you are trying to do. although with rehab, usually neither are a bad thing.

by the sounds of it, you may have fractured your patella. however as people have said, go to the doctor. let us know what the x-ray shows.

I'm hoping it's not an MCL tear though it sounds like it could be. It would explain why your knee doesn't seem stable but yet you were able to bowl -- forward and backward movement wouldn't be affected but lateral movement would. I'd follow headcoach's advice on ice and heat with regard to the swelling but also pick up a knee brace from the local drugstore -- you'll want to provide extra stability to your knee joint. I've strained but never torn my MCL. I kept as much weight off my knee as possible, missed a week or two of hockey after my injury and wore a brace under my shin pad the first few weeks back.

I assume an ultrasound will give a better idea of what's wrong. Good luck tomorrow. Hope it's not too serious.

Go to a specialist.

I blew out both of my knees from playing hockey. I tore my acl mcl and maniscus in my right knee and it took me over a year to get back to the ice.

I tore my maniscus in my left knee that needed to be scoped and I ended up cracking the bone in the lower leg. I was out for 2 months and decided to forgo physical therapy. Bad Idea because that knee gives me all kinds of problems.

I went to my doctor and he gave me all kinds of painkillers and now if I get hurt vicodin doensn't do squat for me. Took me a long time to get off that crap. Just be smart and get it taken care of right the first time so your not 23 (24 wed night) and having serious knee problems.

As a matter of fact my knee problems have caused back problems do to bad walking habits. Just get it taken care of.

Thanks everybody for the responses, I was losing my mind waiting to see the doctor. I visited the family physician and they of course referred me to an orthopedic surgeon, the same one who did the scope on my left knee 5 years ago. Right now, the diagnosis is an MCL strain and femur/patella contusion. He also suggested there could be a problem with the lateral meniscus as well as articular cartilage damage, which could have been pre-existing. I don't go to the specialist until next week and I am to continue resting it until then. Now I am paranoid about the meniscus, what fun. It feels nothing like torn meniscus when I was 19, which surprised me. Thanks again everyone, I'll probably post again when I know more

I'm thinking it's the same idea as karate chopping a banana. The skin remains intact but the inside is mush.

It must have been one hell of a shot. I'm not saying it's not the case or not possible but I've never heard of a ligament torn like that. I would think that would be more the case of a cracked bone or something.
