Couldn’t watch the game but looked like an emotional goal for Dach

Was he crying because it’s been a tough year or was it relief because he was directly responsible for the goal the Ducks had just scored

The toxicity around Kirby Dach is pretty awful in my opinion. I wish he was playing better - I'm sure he does too - but people calling him lazy or unmotivated or soft or not caring is ridiculous. These words have never accurately described him, and it's unfair to apply them now.

I did some reading to try and understand what he's been through in the past year and a bit. An ACL tear is a traumatic injury, and the recovery process is grueling. For context:
  • In the first two weeks, patients have limited standing or walking.
  • Six weeks post surgery, a primary goal is to step up an 8" stair.
  • At 14 weeks, the aim is to step up a 8" stair without pain.

The recovery isn't just physical. It takes a toll mentally. Studies show that approximately 1 in 3 athletes undergoing ACL reconstruction self-report depression - a significantly higher rate than the general population (source). Even those who don't report deperssion probably don't feel like they're thriving. It's a tough road.

And when an athlete does return, they often aren't 100%. Research highlights deficits in strength, balance, joint forces and kinesthesia for up to two years post-surgery. Additionally, many athletes develop kinesiophobia, aka fear of re-injury, post ACL-reconstruction. This hesitation can impact and delay their return to pre-injury levels. (source, source) It sounds like something you just have to play through/use to get past that feeling as well.

Given all this, I think the fans should show more patience with Kirby this season. Some of you seem to have forgotten just how hyped he was pre-injury. To jog your memory, here are a few comments from this very thread just weeks before his injury:

There are literally pages of similar praise.

His entire treatment in this situation reminds me of Andrei Markov when he returned from traumatic knee injuries. Initially, fans were just as impatient and cruel. I used HFboards awful search function to find old Markov threads from when he returned from injury. You can thank me later. Here are some quotes:

There were also many posts saying Markov was cooked, he should be traded, etc. Just a season later, Markov was back to playing at an elite level. So much so that letting him walk in 2017 is now considered to be one of Marc Bergevin's worst moves as GM.

So before you trash Kirby Dach and call him a lazy good for nothing bum. Before you call to trade him and fill that void with some random prospect. Take a deep breath, do some research, try to think it through a little bit. Let's give Dach the time he needs. He's shown us before what he's capable of, let's give him a reasonable amount of time/chance to get back to that point.

Rant over!!!

Excellent post.

Excellent post.
Great post. I feel the same way. Dach's going through it and the criticism is harsh. I'm really glad you posted this. It will take a long time for him to get back. He might not get there for a couple years. He might not get to what he was showing in his game last year before the injury. Patience is needed and understanding.

It irritates me that we see no patience from MSL or management. Dach is clearly not ready to play top 6 minutes and PP1 which was obvious after like 10 games. Give that kid some relief and stop the torture. Move him to 4th line, so he can slowly come back to his old form. He is now hurting the whole team performance and dragging down Slaf as well.

I think its funny that others would see a 4th line demotion as a lack of patience. If we had a better band-aid 2C, Dach could just play 3C and PP2.

Lack of depth hurts the team in numerous ways. Newhook and Dach underperforming + Slaf and Guhle underproducing has left us in a tough spot. It’s part of the saga of a rebuild but it still is tough to work through when so many high-TOI players are below par.

Laine’s return helps quite a bit because he’s simply lethal — his linemates will want to play with him. Morale goes up, sticks are squeezed less tightly, etc.

Dach needs the monkey off his back. For reasons previously stated I really think he should’ve been scratched and probably still does but the fact is we don’t have another player to step in. No depth hurts all teams, rebuilding teams too.

It is just a matter of communication. We should have been more patient and now we give him little refief, less responsibilities to slowly grow his game.
Get one strong line with CC- Suzuki- Slaf as we already had last year. Add Laine-Evans- Newhook, If they get offensive support from Matheson/Hutson, they would be ok. Not ideal, but they would be able to create some offense and the team might be in the mix, because our bottom 6 is doing good job.
Or you can literally create a shut down line as your 2nd line Armia- Evans- Anderson. None of them is in our long-term plan, so just use their strenghts.
