Canada and Russia unveiled their preliminary camp rosters for the 2014 Olympics. For Canada, Doughty, Richards, and Carter have been invited, while Darren Granger will be an equipment manager for the team. Russia invited Slava Voynov to their camp/has him on their preliminary roster. And looking at Russia's D, Slava has a very good chance to make the team. I expect Doughty is a lock. He has to be. And I think Richards and Carter could both make the team, even if it's just as a 4th line/defensive role. Both are so great defensively that they would be huge for Canada's PK to have. And then I hear Kopi will make some team. :sarcasm:

Somehow, Russia forgot Andrei Loktionov's name. I'll email them and make sure they fix that.

Interesting that the camps (due to $$$ insurance costs) will not include any skating.

GinoRedaTSN: There will be no "tryouts". August camp will outline all the logistics to players and staff will select team at a later date. #tsn

Dec 30 is the date I've read for the final roster.

Form the Team Canada link:

On behalf of Hockey Canada, we thank the players and staff that will be part of the orientation camp in August,” said Pascall. “This camp is very important in our preparation for the upcoming season, as it allows the management group, coaching staff, support staff and players to share information and continue our planning and preparation for Sochi in February.”

The camp roster includes:
•five goaltenders, 17 defencemen and 25 forwards;
•46 players with international experience, including 38 with international experience at the senior level (Olympic Winter Games, IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship);
•15 players who won gold with Canada at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games;
•18 players who played for Canada at the 2002, 2006 or 2010 Olympic Winter Games;
•38 players who have played for Canada at an IIHF World Championship;
•31 players who have played for Canada at an IIHF World Junior Championship;
•17 players who have played for Canada at an IIHF World Under-18 Championship;
•four players who won the 2004 World Cup of Hockey with Canada;
•three of the eight Canadian players in the IIHF Triple Gold Club, having won Olympic gold, IIHF World Championship gold and a Stanley Cup:
◦Patrice Bergeron, Eric Staal, Jonathan Toews;
◦Mike Babcock is the only coach in the IIHF Triple Gold Club;
•one player (Corey Crawford) who has yet to represent Canada in international competition;
•eight players (Karl Alzner, Crawford, Travis Hamonic, Braden Holtby, Kris Letang, Milan Lucic, Brad Marchand, Carey Price) who have yet to represent Canada internationally at the senior level.

Collectively, the 47 players invited to orientation camp have:
•appeared in 1,295 games for Team Canada;
•won 96 gold medals for Canada in international competition;
•appeared in 21,728 NHL regular season games, 2,369 NHL playoff games and 57 NHL All-Star Games;
•won 34 Stanley Cups.

Chicago leads all NHL teams with five players invited to camp, followed by Pittsburgh and San Jose with four:
•5 – Chicago
•4 – Pittsburgh, San Jose
•3 – Boston, Los Angeles, Washington
•2– Anaheim, Carolina, Edmonton, Montreal, N.Y. Islanders, N.Y. Rangers, St. Louis, Tampa Bay, Vancouver
•1 – Colorado, Nashville, Ottawa, Philadelphia, Phoenix, Toronto, Winnipeg

Russia was embarrassed in 2010 and you can bet playing in front of the home town, the Gov't will put a lot of pressure on that team to win. I think Sweden will probably field a good team as well, they have some terrific talent, led by Lundquist. And USA and Canada.
Should be great hockey.

Vasily Koschechkin!!!!! The cat! Yes! Please let him beat out one Bobrov or Varlamov...

Lewis is a hard worker, though it is odd of him being on the initial roster. Perhaps they really want to make a shutdown line. I thought it was interesting that they had Seth Jones on there even though he hasn't even played a game in the NHL yet.

Last go-round, Drury got picked pretty much as a PK specialist (despite being in the throngs of a very crappy season). Given the large roster size, I wouldn't be surprised if they had a PK specialist or two.

Go Lewie!

After looking at the USA roster, I think Brown is a strong candidate for the Captaincy.

The captaincy is between Brown and Parise I think. They also faced each other in 2012. The A's go to Suter, Backes / Callahan / JJ imo.

They have quite a few kids on the team (Jones/Gibson/Trouba/Bjugstad/Bennett) that are probably just there for the experience. Get them prepped for 2018, or perhaps even the World Cup of Hockey if that gets resurrected in 2016.

Updated the OP with easier clickable links for future reference. Thanks to KopitarFAN for the USA link.

Interesting on Lewis. He doesn't really have a shot at the team IMO but it'll be good for him just to have the invite.

Making it easy on people not to click on links, we will have ...

USA - Jonathan Quick (G), Dustin Brown (F), and Trevor Lewis (F)

CANADA - Jeff Carter (F), Drew Doughty (D), and Mike Richards (F)

RUSSIA - Slava Voynov (D)

SLOVENIA - Anze Kopitar (F)

and if BRAZIL ice's a Hockey team - Robyn Regehr (D) ;)
