I'm wondering if the Kings might use one of their amnesty buyouts on Richards this summer. After this season he has seven more years at nearly 6MIL per. I think he's gone unless he'll restructure. He's clearly declining and is looking like a 4th line center at this point.

I'm also wondering about Dustin Brown. I know his contract came after the new CBA and I'm wondering if he could be bought out or asked to restructure as well. I can't imagine watching him for the next eight years at nearly 6MIL per season! :shakehead

Great idea, buy out players who helped get this team to the Cup Finals and Conference Finals in back to back years. Should also throw Quick's name in there.

Come on man, that is a nonsense reply. Quick is playing at a world class level. There is no comparison between him and the others.

I personally don't think the Kings would go the buy out route with either guy because if they chose to they could atleast get a couple of picks for either one.

But the numbers don't lie, almost $12 million a year for the next 6 seasons for guys who are right now the 3rd line RW and 4th line center. That is something that is not realistic going forward, and you are kidding yourself if you think there haven't been discussions about it among Kings management.

Edit: OP you are correct, Brown would not qualify for a buy out under the cba.

The point is people are quick to react. Threads like this and the suggestions to trade Kopitar and yes, even Quick, back in October/November makes me naucious.

All he mentioned was right now the Kings 3rd line rw and 4th line center are in line to make about $70 million over the next six seasons (and Brown's deal has an extra two years). Right now Brown and Richards look good in their bottom six roles, I think Richards may have pieced together his first back to back solid games since October and Brown looks really comfortable with Stoll and King, but I think we can all agree no team in a cap era can pay $12 million to two bottom six forwards. It's not unreasonable to have a discussion about the future of the team and whether those guys and their contracts should be a part of it.

Let's see how these guys perform in the playoffs before we seriously talk about getting rid of any big money earning player who's signed to a long term deal.

Brown can't be bought out, so this will just turn into another Richards argument thread

Brown's contract can't be bought out, also it can't be moved. He is a King for at least another Four years.

Any candidate could probably just be traded instead, I still think Richards carry enough of a reputation for some team lacking depth at C to take that chance. Other than that, maybe if some team is willing to pay up I could see the Kings take on a buyout for another team in return for draft picks, but that's pretty far fetched.

we wont have 2 once we use 1 on Regehr, then re-sign him just to use the other 1 on him

There is exactly a 0% chance the Kings buyout Richards or Brown.

My thoughts exactly. Both are playoff warriors. Richards carried the team at the start of the year and both are starting to show signs of life. Both play a reckless game that takes a toll and both have played a lot of extra games with going so far in the playoffs. Give them a little time to play under 100% to save a little for a cup run. History is on their sides and a one year blip is not the norm.

Unless I completely missed something, I'm almost positive that you can't re-structure a deal.

The only argument that could be made would be to trade Richards and Brown while they have value. My personal opinion is that doing either would be a colossally dumb move.

No way on Richards. Yes, we all know he's having a bad season, but I'm not ready to see he's done at 29 years old. The guy has been money for the Kings in the playoffs both years. 2012 season he started on fire then got his concussion and his play dropped off a cliff for a long stretch. Then he turned it on at the end of the season and the playoffs. 2013 he was one of the scoring leaders during the regular season and the playoffs then got his bell rung by Dave Bolland on a questionable hit late in a game. Losing Richards for 3 games of that series was a killer to the Kings chances. As long as nobody headshots him this season and in the playoffs, I have faith he'll produce down the stretch.

No problem for me. Brown is an average 1st or 2nd line winger but a terrific 3rd line winger. Yes he would be overpaid but hey what team does not have a couple of overpaid guys. He is the Captain and great teammate. Also plays tough when games count.

As for Richards, like him alot but if the Kings amnesty him I can understand.

Kidding myself, from a player's like Mike Richards' standpoint, I'd relish a buy-out which would guarantee me $19 million over the next 12 years (as opposed to $29 million over the next 6). Plus, assuming I can sign on with another team as a second or third line centre (and there's at least 28 other teams and maybe 29 who'd be damn happy to have Richards and what he brings) at say $3.5 million over 5 years and them, assuming I'm still good to go, a further contract of say $2 million for one year to early retirement at age 34, I'm now at $38.5 million over the next 12 years. Plus, from the Kings' side, the organization still has to carry a further cap hit of $1.6 million to $4.4 million over the next 12 years. So my sense is that this hasn't come up among Kings' management even in coffee table discussions.

Ask Vinny Lecavalier how he feels financially, getting $30 million from the Lightning over 14 years and $22.5 million from the Flyers over 5 years.

This thread started under the premise of compliance buyouts but quickly moved to Richards discussion for which there is already a thread as we discussed yesterday.
