I heard a commentator the other day saying something about how

"Kessell doesn't always play nice with his teammates"

Can anyone fill me in?

Just curious to know why he said that. Did something happen before with any of the players on the US roster?

I'm only guessing here, but I've got the impression Kessel likes to do the end to end rushes...I've seen highlites of him doing that quite a bit, so perhaps he's implying that Kessel doesn't pass enough...but someone else may have a better idea.

Yah.. I think some of their families hate each other...

Was it Skille vs. Kessel?

I remember seeing an interview with Crosby and Jack Johnson at last year's draft and they told the story of how Kessel's mom always heckled Crosby at Shattuck-St. Mary's.

Apparently one time, Kessel's mom was over the glass screaming at Crosby, so Crosby lines up for the faceoff in the offensive zone, turned back to Johnson at the point and said "watch this". He put the puck through the other guy's skates walked right to the net and buried a goal 3 seconds after the puck dropped.

Johnson said in the interview Kessel's mom shut up pretty quick :)

Its a combination of all those things. It does seem like Kessel is using his teammates better this year. I think what the person was refering to was rifts between Kessel and Skille and Kessel and J.Johnson. It seems as if Kessel doesn't get along with these two that well and vice versa.

Yeah, that's pretty much it in a nutshell. Kessel is not the best of buddies with Johnson and especially Skille. Guess what though? That didn't stop the U.S. U18 from being pretty dominant last year, culminanting in winning the under 18 championships. This topic is a non-issue.

So the beef really just seems to be between Phil's mother and the Skille and Johnson families, no?

We can only imagine the drama when Robbie McConnel and Kumar Singh suit up for Canada :sarcasm: (this reference will get alot of blank faces from our American friends I think).

I agree totally. I don't think this will be a problem at all. I just don't think you'll see Skille and Kessel on the same line.

i wouldn't make much of it. it's being played up as a possible reason the US WJC team could fall flat, but as RR mentioned, it's not like they haven't been successful teammates in the past. Very successful, in fact.

Just because a team wins something in the past doesnt mean that its a non-issue in the future.Tell that to the Eagles that because they got to the Super Bowk last year with all of Owens antics it , Owens antics wouldnt be an issue in the future. It obviously is an issue anytime you have team mates who dont like each other. Doesnt mean they wont win, but it certainly winning a championship in the past certainly doesnt render it a non-issue, either then but espeicially now.
Man are you ever defensive about USA hockey , but especially Kessell.

I doubt any tension between the two or three will make any difference at this tourney.Wishful thinking i'd say.

Yeah, I'm frightened.
I just kinda laugh whenever people dismiss anything of having an effect in the future cause it hasnt affected it in the past (which actually, isnt even neccesarly the case). Amazingly enough, the people saying things with such certainty are usually those hoping the most that actually what they say is true.

I'm not being defensive, I'm stating fact. Phil Kessel is not best buds with either Jack Skille or Jack Johnson, yet somehow they made it through a WHOLE season together last year, was very successful each step of the way, and finished it up by winning the Under 18s. You tell me, does it appear that Kessel and Skille/Johnson's personality conflict has proven to be a huge issue in the past? The answer of course is no. Why do you think that it will cause a rift now? You guys kill me. Yeah, I'm pretty passionate about USA Hockey, but to refute what I say, all you fall back on is innuendo, rumor, and the tired accusation I'm a homer. get some new material will ya?

Are you telling me you know more about the inner workings of the U.S. team and the dynamics that go into the interpersonal relationships between the players? I can tell you right now you don't. People that actually know what they're talking about know this crap is a non-issue, yet people like you appear to be holding on to whatever shred of controversy in order to cast doubt on the ability of the U.S. to win the WJC's this year. Give it up.

You are frickin homer (& apparently, an "insider"). Its funny when Joe homer says nothing will effect their team cause it hasnt in the past. Like, how do you know it hasnt?. Cause they won. Nice logic there Bud. Give your "logic" to the Eagles. No one saying with any certainty says it will have any effect, but only Joe Homer is so certain it cant & wont. Geez, I wonder why that is.
Give it up.

Very interesting. Thanks for this guys.

Just imagine what Ovechkin would've done.

If the supposed conflict between Kessel and Skille/Johnson was as bad as some are making it, then no, the U18 team wouldn't have been as successful as they were. If you don't understand or accept that, it's your problem.

Lots of teammates don't like each other. It's like that on almost every team. Some people just don't get along, and there's a lot that goes on in the behind the scenes that people don't know about. Just because this particular situation is public knowledge doesn't mean it's going to be a huge problem.

Why do you say that? Maybe the States was so superior they won in spite of a real conflict.
Btw, who is saying that it was so "bad".
If you cant "understand" that a result is not definitive of their being no problem, "thats your problem".
