This team will live and die with chabot and Sanderson. They need to insulate them with solid defensive defenseman.
You're 100% right in theory but it might be too soon for Sanderson, he has only 2 pts at ES this season. Sanderson doesn't need a "
solid defensive defenseman" like Chabot or Karlsson because his best quality is actually defensive play. Having Karlsson as a partner could even help him to produce at ES. Remember it would be Karlsson at 5 M$ in this scenario and only for 2.5 seasons, a stop gap while Yakemchuk develops. This would also prevent Hamonic from playing (HUGE bonus) and offset Zub constant injuries
Sanderson - Karlsson
Chabot - Jensen
Kleven - JBD
Hamonic
Karlsson was mediocre at best in his own end in his prime, now he is aging and gives even less of a shit. Plus he has never dominated on a team where he wasn't the only star player, and he wouldnt even be the most important defenseman on this team.
But that's the thing... he wouldn't be brought up to dominate but to help out ES offense from the right side. He would also give more PP options. Maybe he'd give up more of a shit like you say if brought back to his Canadian hometown.
Karlsson is really poor at certain aspects of defense but has always been elite at other aspects. Being paired with Sanderson would actually be heavily beneficial for both IMO.
one particular year is doing some heavy lifting in that 3-year sample, i wonder which one it could possibly be
Ah ok didn't expect having to waste time on this but ok I guess
2021-22 : 49th but only played 50 games. He was 13th in Pts/60 at ES (min 50 GP)
2023-24 : 12th in ESP among D-men
2024-25 : 31st, 2 more pts and he is 18th
I never said Ottawa would need him to repeat any of his Norris seasons... just a stop gap for 2 seasons who would help driving the play at ES.
