So both will hit the market in a couple of years (pending re-signing ahead of time).

Burns just signed an 8x8 deal and Subban is pulling 9M per.

I would think the base of a deal for these 2 is 9.25M per and likely headed towards 10M per (barring some kind of crazy change with the CBA).

Unpopular opinion - I think Doughty does not make it to market. He has 2 cups with the Kings, and has won 2 gold medals. He can stay where he is comfortable.

I think Karlsson could hit UFA. My rationale is he'd like to win a cup and the Senators never do spend to the cap, so he could see it being too big of a hurdle to overcome. Not trying to start beef with Sens fans but it is just my opinion.

Biggest point though - 9.25-10M per for Karlsson and Doughty come contract extension or signing (if either hit UFA) time?

You would hope that Senators management learned from the Alfie fiasco. When Karlsson's up for renewal, you let him tell you a number and you give the man his money.

Karlsson should get double digits since he'll be 28 when he's a UFA.

Lombardi will probably try low balling but end up giving in.

Yah, Sens will do everything to keep him. Just give him what he wants, he's a rare type of player.

Devil's advocate but would Karlsson even want to do that? He can get paid, but then they can't afford to fill in a talented team around him and then he's still in the same spot of not winning.

****IFFFFF**** that is a priority.

both at 8 years, $11m AAV, provided their play doens not drop off... which I don't think it will in the next 2 years. They will only be 29 going into their new contract.

Depends.

Do they want to cripple their teams by asking for 10+ mill, they probably can.

If their first priority is to win a(nother) cup, they sign for less.

Karlsson is likely gone, unless Ottawa finds some money. on the market he's getting 10.5/11 x 7.

Ottawa has to offer at least 10 and look to be contending(not likely)for him to resign.

Doughty should look at comparables and demand 8x10. These guys are the best of the best.

I see Karlsson signing the same contract as Kane/Toews so 10.5M per. He could get more than that in the open market IMO.

11 million x 8 years for either to Edmonton. Literally the missing piece to a potential dynasty

Klefbom - Karlsson
Nurse - Larrson
Davidson - Jones

I like it...lots

if Karlsson get $10m Doughty should get $9,999,999.99 just to prove a point and satisfy the angry gods

Also need to consider that if they re-sign it's 8 years, if they change teams, it is a 7 year contract.

Maybe Doughty goes 8.75M x8? I am not sure about the tax laws in California and how friendly they are to players.

So much can change with the cap in a short period of time, so it is hard to make a fair prediction.

If Karlsson was a free agent this off season, I think he might sign for anywhere from 9.5-10.5 on an 8 year contract. One thing to consider is that when guys like Subban, Toews, Kane, etc signed those huge contracts, the cap was still in the "IT'LL NEVER FALL" glory phase with GMs expecting it to go up substantially every year. So 10.5 right now is a lot more of a commitment than 10.5 was when Toews and Kane signed.

If he hits the open market, I don't think he signs for dramatically more than 10.5. The reason is, if the Sens are willing to pay him, and he still hits the open market, it is because he deemed the Sens weren't the right fit and he'll be prioritizing finding the right fit. It is always possible a team with a ton of cap room could come out of nowhere and offer him something absurd like max x 5 years, but the odds of that happening are low.

Here's what will happen.....the same thing that happens with a majority of elite players. Other fan bases will pester the Sens saying omg Karlsson is going to walk. OMG he is going home to play for the Toronto Maple Leafs now that they have relocated to Sweden. Then in November of 2018 Karlsson will sign an 8 year contract worth 80-100 million because players rarely want to risk playing through their contract year when they are already established as elite and have that kind of money sitting on the table.

I'd take Karlsson no problem on the Leafs and you make some great points.

What no..

Doughty signs for

$10,000,000.01

To prove a point and satisfy the angry gods.

He'd probably sign for that after the Canadian media spends a year campaigning about how he is due to make a dollar more than Karlsson when they both re-sign.
