The Finnish Ice-Hockey Association reported today that Canada and Switzerland will join Finland, Sweden, Czech Republic and Russia in this year's Karjala Tournament.

The initiative came from Canada and as Switzerland agreed to join too, the organizers will get a working tournament program sorted out. As the NHLers won't participate in the Olympics, this will be a prime opportunity for players from other leagues to make a case for themselves re: the Olympic roster.

The tournament schedule will be published around middle of August, and the tickets will come on sale on August 31st.

This is pretty cool actually, even though it's just basic EHT it should be good. Canadian team should be interesting.

Canada used to participate in the Sweden Hockey games between 1991-92 through 2003-04, and also in the former Izvestia Trophy (known as Channel One Cup these days) even longer ago. I always enjoyed seeing Canada in these tournaments and hope they will be back permanently.

Cool to see 2 more teams !

Pretty obvious Canada is participating to get some extra practice for the olympics from their non nhl players. Smart move! :handclap:

where is USA?

there is a word that say it is not so easy to build a team USA for Karjala. do not ask me why. I dont know... But in my opinion, Canada has more players in European leagues and has more interest about the Olympics...

please no. I like it time to time.

Obviously Canada needs some space to build their Olympics team, so this is logical initiative.

With six teams, I wonder if it's played in two groups of three. The schedule could be something like this.

Wednesday
Finland vs Switzerland
Russia vs Canada (considering that one game in each tournament has been played in other country, this might be played in Russia)

Thursday
Switzerland vs Sweden
Canada vs Czech Rep

Saturday
Sweden vs Finland
Czech Rep vs Russia

Sunday
3rd vs 3rd
2nd vs 2nd
1st vs 1st

Good to see Team Canada back in Euro Hockey tour.
Now Eric Perrin ( probably best Canadian player in SM liiga and stanley cup champion in Tampa Bay 2004) has chance to compete roster spot for Team Canada's Olympic team.
