I haven't watched many Rangers games but I was stat watching and it surprised me that Kakko is one of the best take away artists in the whole league.

22 takeaways, 1 less than Barkov. Per 60 he (KK) is the best if you don't count those with just couple of games

He has been abusing guys in the neutral zone all season.

Both Rangers fans and fans of other teams look at his points and draw conclusions that he is playing poorly. But that couldn't be farther from the truth.

The only immediate improvement he can make (and one which he has been taking steps toward) is creating and finishing scoring chances more assertively.

Kakko is another guy who you wonder if the point narrative changes if gets powerplay time.

In another thread MH and I talked about Lafreniere potentially being at a 20 goal, 50 point pace over 82 games if you factor in modest powerplay time and production.

Last year Kakko had 2 goals and 11 assists on the powerplay. Let's even assume that his better play this year gives him 4 goals and 14 assists if he's on the special teams unit.

Over 82 games that would probably have him in the 16 goal, 34 point range (12g/18 pts at ES) + (4g/16 pts on special teams).

Again, all hypothetical and based on previous numbers, but very plausible. It also tends to show just how much of a boost special teams production can have when doing a stat glance.

This also highlight that the team just isn't giving these young, elite talents the pp opportunities this season and it is becoming increasing frustrating. They run the pp1 for 1:40 each time and then send pp2 out there for one rush up the ice before it's 5v5. I wish they integrated them more into these schemes at this point, it is the perfect place to give young O talent a chance to grow if you don't trust them with regular 5v5 minutes without sheltering.

I've stated before that it seems like the strategy on the PP is play all the best offensive players and pray they score a goal. Then PP2 comes out and stinks for the remaining 10 seconds because they don’t get much live in game action.

Laf or Kakko should absolutely be on the Right Wing on the PP.

It’s really hard for me to believe that with the way Kakko controls the game that it won’t translate into production on the scoresheet. It has to come sooner or later
Last year he was a step behind physically and mentally. This season he's caught up physically, maybe even half-step a head at times. Mentally he's still half-step behind but he's getting there. I'm with you that it's more a matter of when, not if.

Probably his best game as a Ranger so far
Easily his best game as a Ranger. Looked great from beginning to end.

He still made some mistakes in the end game, the whiff on the one timer from Panarin and at least one other fanned on shot, but if he starts cleaning that up while maintaining his beastly possession and stick handling game, watch out.

It will. I believe in Laf and Kakko. Not because I “have to” as a fan, but because I think the talent is there and will only manifest itself as this becomes their team.

Real nice game capped off with a goal. Good for him. Nice to see his solid play get results.

He had a great opportunity in the 1st when he held onto the puck too long. He took a worse shot than the one he had.

Those are the types of things you want to see him figure out with experience.

3 goals in 5 games. Hope the production keeps coming.

I think he has learned pretty well how to start applying his size and puck skills at the NHL level but hasn’t quite got the shot and playmaking instincts down yet
Given the huge improvement in other areas though I think it will come if the coaches don’t start messing with his ice time again
