If Rangers somehow decide to move him in a trade. "Can we get a top pick in the 2021-22 draft?"

It wasn't really an option for him. Once the season ended, he had to go back to Finland due to the pandemic.

He trained with Marko Rautala in Turku though. The same guy Rantanen, Laine and Ristolainen (among others) train with during the off-season

Good find. I was very curious about that. Kakko's getting plenty of Prentice time, but yeah Risto looks like Dolph Lundgren from Rocky IV. Rantanen is an animal. Kakko's getting the best of both worlds.

I actually don't think Kakko trained with Prentice (which I think is a huge mistake)

Prentice works for the Rangers no? What do you think happens with these guys during the season for their dry land training?

prentiss is listed on the rangers site as a strength & conditioning consultant but not sure exactly what that means...he trains players for other teams too.

Marko Rautala is a guru of sorts among Finnish NHLers. Patrik Laine, Koivu Brothers, Rantanen etc. all go to his off-season training "school". He has trained most of the Finnish NHLers.

It's amazing, it has to be a confidence thing. He looks quicker there, he makes quick decisions, and he's aggressive and chases the puck. And he's on the ice against guys like not only Jack Hughes, but Ryan Suter, Jack Eichel, etc.
Looks like he’s playing scared under Quinn. Scared to make a mistake, scared to take a D 1 on 1, to shoot more, etc. I thinks he’s really nervous
1. Because his first NHL season was subpar
2. Scared Quinn will take away his minutes or bench him.
Quinn has to put him on PP2 if for nothing else just to get his confidence up. It will allow him to shoot, handle the puck, basically just give him more experience. We all see glimpses of a special player but one that’s playing timid and second guessing his own decisions

He’s on pp2 right now, but the issue is that pp2 gets 1/5th the minutes pp1 gets. It’s not as productive and they never get any time to set up, or gain any cohesion.
Pp1 got almost 9 minutes in the game.
Pp2 close to 2 minutes.
Pp2 right now is kakko, laf, Howden, lemieux and trouba.
I don’t have a problem with Howden for face offs, but chytil and kakko are dominating at even strength, I can’t for the life of me get how you don’t have chytil on the ice for the power play, Howden and lemieux have a redundant role in the pp, both should be that net front presence and pushing the puck up the boards. You don’t need both of them.

He said in a Podcast Interview after last season (in Finland) that he didn't really understand some of the decisions to take away his ice-time. Or that it was never really explained or relayed to him. I can imagine that eats away your confidence when you have no idea if you're doing the right thing and even if you do, it's suddenly the thing that gets you demoted or benched. This whole unhappiness towards Quinn is also not just about Kakko, but he's taking it all out on Kaapo the hardest. Maybe because Quinn thinks Kaapo has the highest ceiling, but you also have to understand as a coach that not every player - especially 18-19 year olds - is a robot. A good coach finds a way to dance the fine line between a tyran and a softie.

I thought Kakko played well.

Wish he got more special teams time.

Either Laffy, Buch or Kakko should be in Strome's spot.

He is trusted WAY too much. He's been shitty.

Also, they need a lefty (any one of those three above) where they have Strome on the PP for one timers from both sides. Having all 3 righties on the PP up front doesn't make much sense.

I am a little disappointed but not concerned yet in his development. Just haven't seen much flashes of him being a dynamic NHL forward yet (key word). We know he can finish on a goalie, but he needs to get setup with a pass. We've seen him have a few good puck possession shifts in the offensive zone but he's not really turning them into good chances, moreso just a cycle back to the point or down low. Smart, solid plays but not game breaking plays.

We all we wanna see end to end rushes where he generates offense on his own. And we wanna see those plays and twists and turns off the wall turn into him taking the puck to the net or setting up someone with a pass...

My mouth is watering at the idea of a Panarin-Chytil-Kakko line. Do you think this would ever happen under Quinn? I have massive doubts.

Prentiss gets their rookie class each offseason and does the testing and screening in training camp. I believe that's the extent of it. The Rangers do have their own strength coach but because Ben is local, many guys work with him over the summer.

I think fans are being impatient with a Kakko., he had honestly looked pretty good despite the limited ice time he is getting. I mean he got a goal the other night. Obviously as usual some of our fans are overreacting because Hughes had a big night against us but it’s only game 3. The points will come for Kakko and Laf
I was just gonna say it didn’t help to see Jack Hughes skating all over us looking like a seasoned pro. I’m sure that pisses kakko off too. Credit to Hughes, he put the work in. The kid is already a game breaker. Sucks that he’s on the devils but he is one of my favorite prospects/ young players in the league. USA ! USA!

Good point, though it’s a big step up from last year when he was a turnover machine

I think the Kakko confidence thing is overblown. He's looked good the last two games, just like in the play in. He just needs reps and some consistency in who he's playing with. Obviously that's not happening tho.

1-10 or 1-100?

after last night, it's either at a 4 or a 36 I'd say pending on which you'd prefer.

Lol

I think 1-10 is good. 1-100 might be too granular.

I agree it's 4. He's not feeling all that confident after getting scraps for minutes and seeing Hughes become the man.

What am I missing when I don’t understand those that are saying he’s looked good? Can you point me to a couple of plays and/or shifts that I can rewatch and reassess?

I feel like I’m quickly becoming a Kakko hater. I don’t want that to be the case. I am not making any arguments about what Kakko can possibly become or what his ceiling is - that’s above my pay grade. But, I do feel pretty confident saying that he has yet to impress me outside of a few good plays here and there.

Is it too much to expect that a player of this caliber would dominate a game every now and then as he develops towards that elite ceiling? Why does he look so much slower and less dangerous with the puck than his fringe line mate Di Giuseppe?
