Speculation: Justin Schultz - Is he not a good veteran to sign?

Looking at the remaining UFAs, he seems to be the most decent one still available. I didn't get to see many Kraken games, was he that bad? Seems to me that a few teams could use him as a 5/6 Dman? Do you think he's holding out for a better contract or simply not wanted anywhere?

Was tempted to copy/paste my response to a different thread asking about Tyson Barrie. In a nutshell, most teams have 7/8 D signed already to NHL deals. Other teams who have an opening like say Anaheim are probably looking for a defensive minded D rather than what Schultz would provide.

Ballpark RHD depth by division:

ANA: Gudas-Luneau
CGY: Weeger (plays left side)-Andersson-Miromanov-Pachal
EDM: Bouchard-Ceci-Brown (Broberg played right side during playoffs)
LAK: Doughty-Spence-Burroughs-Clarke
SJS: Rutta-Emberson-Benning
SEA: Montour-Larsson-Borgen-Fleury
VAN: Hronek-Myers-Desharnais-Friedman-Juulsen
VGK: Pietrangelo-Whitecloud-Korczak (Theodore can play right side)

If I were Schultz/Barrie's agent, I'd be trying to link up a short term deal with San Jose but the Sharks might prefer to keep a spot open for Henry Thrun or Shakir Mukhamadullin. I suppose it wouldn't shock me if Calgary added another RHD before camp.

CHI: Jones-Murphy (Brodie/Martinez could play right side)
COL: Makar-Manson-Malinski (Kylington/Brannstrom could play right side)
DAL: Dumba-Lyubushkin-Lundkvist (Heiskanen plays right side)
MIN: Faber-Spurgeon-Bogosian
NSH: Carrier-Schenn-Fabbro
STL: Parayko-Faulk-Kessel
UTA: Marino-Durzi-Kesselring-Soderstrom
WPG: Pionk-DeMelo-Miller-Coghlan

Not seeing a likely landing spot here barring a precursor transaction (like if Nashville traded Fabbro).

BOS: McAvoy-Carlo-Peeke
BUF: Jokiharju-Clifton (Dahlin plays right)
DET: Seider-Petry-Holl
FLO: Ekblad-Boqvist (Schmidt/Kulikov can play right)
MON: Savard-Reinbacher-Barron (not sure if Harris shifts to right side)
OTT: Jensen-Zub-Hamonic-JBD
TBL: Cernak-Perbix-Raddysh
TOR: Tanev-Liljegren-Hakanpaa?-Timmins

I thought Florida could be a fit but they've since signed Boqvist/Schmidt off the scrap heap. Seems like they intend to go with Bjornfot/Balinskis as the #7.

CAR: Burns-Walker-Chatfield-Morrow
CLB: Severson-Jiricek-Gudbranson-Blankenburg
NJD: Hamilton-Pesce-Nemec-Kovacevic
NYI: Dobson-Pulock-Mayfield
NYR: Fox-Trouba-Schneider-Ruhwedel
PHI: Drysdale-Ristolainen-Johnson-Attard
PIT: Letang-Karlsson
WSH: Carlson-Roy-TvR-Bear?

I'd bet a box of donuts that Pittsburgh adds a RHD before camp but I don't think Schultz would be the type of D they'd be looking for.

I'm surprised Schultz is still out there tbh. Has he dropped off that bad? I was under the impression his defensive game has actually gotten pretty okay since getting to Seattle.

He's a PTO type guy. Personally I'd rather have Barrie not that I want him either. Both and Shattenkirk will get one way deals still. It will just take a club with serious depth issues and a major injury to cover likely to pen to paper.
