Would love to see Kane in blue. He's still only 22 and should become a perennial 25/25 guy with size and grit. Signed for 4 more years at a cap hit of 5.25...not sure what he would cost. Quite a bit I'd imagine...unless his immaturity has his team down on him. If so perhaps he's a buy low candidate.

How can you take the lineup with him rather than without if you don't consider what you would need to give up? That makes no sense. Sure, if you left the team the way it is now, eliminated the salary cap, and made him the 1C, yeah, the team looks better. But that's not how it works. It costs assets and $ under the cap.

I'd rather just go with Stepan/Brassard/Miller and let them develop. We can make a deal in-season if they don't develop as expected.

We're not in "develop mode."

We're in WIN mode.

We just went to the SCF with Richards in Miller's spot. J.T. Miller is not a 50 point player out of the gate. We don't even know if he's legitimately ready to play in the NHL full-time. The core of this team (currently) can win The Stanley Cup if Stepan is our #2 C. So some combination of Staal/Brassard/(even perhaps moving Miller or Klein as well) going out with a decent Staal replacement and a better center than Brassard coming back is what we're looking for.

We'd even be fine losing both Brassard and Miller if we're getting a legit 1C back.

Oscar Lindberg may challenge for the 3C regardless, or we can sign a cheap stop-gap 3C like Derek Roy or Steve Ott.

The 1-2 combination is the most important part of the equation.

It's a lot easier to eventually find a 3C (even mid-season if you have to) than a 1C.

This is just a fundamental difference in how we think, so I'm not going to try to convince you of anything. Personally, I think this is a dangerous way to approach the season and could really set us back for years and years and years. I prefer a mix of win now and develop. All the good teams do it, they bring in rookies to the bottom 6 and let them play.

I like that you think outside the box, but I prefer to live in reality. There's a salary cap. You need young players to perform in a salary cap world. JT Miller is a 21 year old PPG player in the AHL. Having him battle for the 3C job and hopefully win it is not the worst thing in the world. We don't need Miller to replace all of Richards' points. We brought in Boyle, who will give us 20-25 more points than Stralman. Zuccarello, Stepan, Kreider, Brassard, may increase their points. Being conservative, lets say the 4 of them combine for just 15 more points this season than they had last year. That's already 35-40 points we made up. Now Miller gets 30-35 points. That's 65-70 points we've increased. Give or take some added goals against for whatever, we can make up those points.

We'd even be fine losing both Brassard and Miller if we're getting a legit 1C back.

Good God, you don't think JT Miller can score 50 points, which I agree he probably won't, but you want to hand the 3C to Ott or Lindberg or Roy?

Yes, it is. That's like saying it's easier to find a girl who likes Starbucks than it is to find one who likes Hooters. I don't think this need to "win now" should provoke us to throw a young core away and become one of the oldest teams in the NHL.

If we do this, our "core" would become

Nash - 30
Henrik - 32
Thornton - 34/Staal - 30
St. Louis - 39
McDonagh - 25
Girardi - 30

etc.

I would prefer to roll with Stepan (24), Brassard (27), Miller (21). We have to see what Miller has and if he can be a contributor in that position before throwing millions at the likes of Thornton and Staal.

Again, this is just a matter of philosophy. I am of the mindset that the team can be win now and incorporate youth, and the final roster doesn't need to be set before training camp. If Miller blows, or Stepan/Brassard don't improve, and it's hurting the team, Sather will make a move. Those same guys will be available and we can make adjustments.

I wonder if a few years ago you were advocating that they move Kreider for Nash because Nash is what we could only hope Kreider would be and we have to win now? You have to incorporate youth, and top level youth (e.g., Saad in Chicago, Toffoli and Pearson in LA, Maata in Pitt). Miller needs to play and we need to see what we have.

imo heatley wouldnt be such a bad idea for NY... signed at the right price to a 2yr deal (cause pouliots 1yr deal turned out to 5x4) he can turn things around... AV has saved higgins and pouliots careers.... whats one more ?

No team is signing him for more than a year. Unless he's coming here on a million, million 5 it's not gonna be worth it.

I think he's going to sign a very friendly deal. I really hope the Rangers put a call into him prior to signing Glass.

Id take Heater on a friendly "show me" contract; he isn't what he once was but I think if you put him in the right environment he could still put up 40-50 points. I believe it would be a really good depth signing, he still has a killer shot and maybe with a summer of hard work he can get some semblance of his legs back (honestly they haven't been the same since his accident) and that would probably fill the Pouliot role.

low risk/high reward imo

Rangers aren't trading Staal for a center.

It doesn't make sense in real life or in trade fantasies. Not after letting Stralman go.

Sather's obsessed with assembling a team of 2003 all-stars, eh? Man...just when it seems like the interest is moving towards getting younger (Staal, Brass, Miller, Kreider, Moore), we go and get Dan Boyle and (supposedly) have interest in Staal and Thornton. With the prospects cupboard looking pretty empty and a lack of first rounders for 3 years in a row, this organization is essentially screwing up in a lot of categories.

Moving Brassard+ for an aging Thornton (never mind his cap hit) really handicaps us cap-wise. So few free agents have come to New York and actually produced as advertised.

In summary: :help:

if we had our first id say trade everyone... free up lots of cap space, tank, draft Mcdavid, make a public statement that we will pay Toews, Kane the $12m they want, and then sign them both :handclap:

its so easy in EA Sports:yo:
