I can't see how adding Joe Thornton to the mix makes the Rangers better equipped to survive four rounds in the playoffs. Thornton still brings that great ability as a setup man but that's not an area where the Rangers are lacking with St. Louis, Zucc and Brassard. The Rangers need to develop or find more skaters who push the pace of the game in the playoffs. Thornton does not and never has done that. There is such a huge emphasis on speed in today's game and that is not something you're going to get out of a player like him. Trading an excellent defensive defenseman in Marc Staal, who is in his prime no less, for Thornton would hurt the Rangers. Remember, last year's Rangers team got farther in the playoffs than any team Thornton has ever been on.

It's still early in the summer, but the Rangers could very well take a step back next season. It would not be the end of the world if they did. Five players are already gone from the 19 that dressed in Game 5. Trading for 1st line centers (ones worth acquiring anyway) usually takes a lot of assets going the other way. It's not like the Rangers have a lot of top prospects they'd be willing to part with.

The franchise could be better served by giving these players a chance to earn a spot on the team next year and show the Rangers what they can do at the NHL level. The cap situation is going to force the Rangers to find inexpensive solutions to fill the holes in the roster when you account for the RFAs that are going to get raises. See what Miller, Lindberg, Fast, MacIlrath, etc. can do next year. The lack of cap room this summer could be a blessing in disguise if it prevents another expensive free agent center from coming to NY just to disappoint.

We can, but it would take another toll just like the Nash trade. We also can go 10% over the cap during the summer, so we'd have time to figure out more moves.

Will not be nearly as much damage as Nash trade. Nash was an under 30 considered franchise player with what 5-6 years left on a contract, Thornton is 34 with 3 years, rumors of SJ management wanting him out added to the fact of the rumors of him only wanting to go to NYR, will make this a lot less painful than the Nash saga

Kreider-Thornton-Nash.

Assuming that's all true.

If this NHLrumorsdaily guy is right (has been before surprisngly) then this team is going all out. The top six would be the best in some time. Absolutely loaded, and maybe get the All star heatley on the 3rd line then its a really deep 3 lines 1a 1b and 1c. Only concern is how the D will end up being with losing Stralman and Staal

I'm gonna say it would end up...really ****ing bad.

Come on, "trying to unload Kreider"? LOL

Trade Brassard instead of Staal is a no Brainer. You don't pay a 3C over 4M

Says who? Brassard was ranked 48th in points by Centers last year. Going 5 above and 5 below, excluding Soderberg/Johansson/Ennis since they were on ELC's on bridge contracts (and adding in the next player to replace them) the average of those players was 4.745M last year.

I mean its not smart

If you can get a good #3/4 D-man for Brassard, Staal for Thornton definitely makes the team better. Even better if you can get a D-man on an ELC or Bridge deal that makes the cap a bit easier to manage over this next season and a few to come. Imagine a Petry type of return for Brassard, that helps the team for years to come as well as making the team better now.

But, the odds of things happening that way are so ridiculously low, it's nice to dream about, but I won't get my hopes up.

#1) Depends how you look at it. I saw SJ win 3 games v. the Kings. The Rangers won 1.

#2) Thornton never had Lundqvist.

Truth be told, I am not a huge Thornton fan, but the Rangers need to add a skilled center, and he looks like one of the few possibilities out there, but I'm only interested if the price is players not on the roster yet.

We need a Center in addition to Brassard and Stepan not at the expense of them.

Rangers can't afford to deplete their center depth. They need more not less. Trading Brass for Joe still leaves the Rangers with problems down the middle.

Trading Staal creates a problem in the top 4. John Moore is not for that spot.

Any hypothetical trade should also be accompied with a solution of how to address the problem that acquisition creates.

According to the account that is reporting Jumbo to the Rangers, the Rangers are also about to sign Ryan Carter and Dany Heatley. Honestly, I'd love all 3 moves. Heatley playing with Brass and Zucc; Carter playing with Moore and... sigh... Glass on the 4th. And of course, JT playing with his buddy Nash.

That said, even if SJ kept 1.5m, as allegedly requested by Sather, how do we fit under the cap? Let's say, and this is likely extraordinarily generous, Brass and Zucc each get 4m, Kreider 2.5, and J. Moore 950k. Carter gets 1, Heatley gets 2. Conor Allen comes up to fill the last D role. We have $12,500 in cap space and no scratches on the roster.

I know, I know. Why did I bother to figure this out? Bc I would like it to happen. But I think this is just more evidence that it won't (can't).

I don't know why we're even discussing the rumors from that twitter, but I would love Ryan Carter.

I'm solid on Heatley but it wouldn't be the worst move in the world.

That source u guys r all talking about is not credible trust me I'm on twitter and used to follow him, it's not happening

He's also saying Talbot would be part of an Eric Staal trade. WHO NEEDS A BACKUP GOALIE ANYWAYS.
