I can't see how adding Joe Thornton to the mix makes the Rangers better equipped to survive four rounds in the playoffs. Thornton still brings that great ability as a setup man but that's not an area where the Rangers are lacking with St. Louis, Zucc and Brassard. The Rangers need to develop or find more skaters who push the pace of the game in the playoffs. Thornton does not and never has done that. There is such a huge emphasis on speed in today's game and that is not something you're going to get out of a player like him. Trading an excellent defensive defenseman in Marc Staal, who is in his prime no less, for Thornton would hurt the Rangers. Remember, last year's Rangers team got farther in the playoffs than any team Thornton has ever been on.
It's still early in the summer, but the Rangers could very well take a step back next season. It would not be the end of the world if they did. Five players are already gone from the 19 that dressed in Game 5. Trading for 1st line centers (ones worth acquiring anyway) usually takes a lot of assets going the other way. It's not like the Rangers have a lot of top prospects they'd be willing to part with.
The franchise could be better served by giving these players a chance to earn a spot on the team next year and show the Rangers what they can do at the NHL level. The cap situation is going to force the Rangers to find inexpensive solutions to fill the holes in the roster when you account for the RFAs that are going to get raises. See what Miller, Lindberg, Fast, MacIlrath, etc. can do next year. The lack of cap room this summer could be a blessing in disguise if it prevents another expensive free agent center from coming to NY just to disappoint.
