The who: Primarily a left shot RW, but can play LW and C. Has consistently been a 40-55 point player who can play on the PP.

The what: Two more seasons at 5M per cap hit, total salary is 3.5M per year. No trade protection.

The why: NYI would be looking for a change of scenery type deal, preferably a right handed winger or left handed defenseman.

I think alot of people under rate Bailey and think the Isles are a cap strapped team that needs to shed money when they really don't unless they want to make a splash. They have the room to sign their guys and keep Bailey but Bailey does have value. As you said - can play anywhere in the top 9, plays all 3 positions, PP and PK and seems to come in clutch in the playoffs. Id like to see a 1for1 type trade for a dman. A guy like Schmidt or Martinez(i know VGK have their own cap problems) come to mind. Someone with similar cap but addresses the isles LHD need. Id certainly accept a pick for Bailey, say a 2nd or 3rd but too many people think the Isles are going to need to package Bailey with a pick/prospect to get a team to take him. He's still a valuable player

This was my suggestion in the Isles looking for a dman thread. Isles fans seemed to be against it because Schmidt is a little more expensive and has an extra year, but I didn't see anything else that seemed like a fit either.

Muzzin?

Leafs save a tiny bit of money for the same term - get some depth scoring (and reunite with JT although I don't know if they were even good together), and open up the depth chart for Sandin. Isles get a top 4 LD to play with Dobson or Pulock.

I've suggested a Bailey for Muzzin swap before. Their salary/term is about identical so it would be a cap wash. From TOR's perspective they get a solid vet RW who has done well in the playoffs and had good chemistry with Tavares.

Isles need puck-moving LHD - my questions would be around whether Muzzin provides the level of skating/skill they need and especially his health/durability.

Agree, Muzzin is a quality D but might not fit how the Islanders are trying to shape their blueline next season which is my hold up.

I'd probably do that.

His concussion history this past season alone scares me.
Considering the caphits cancel out, there would still be enough cap to bring in a more sure thing as the second pair LD, assuming you replace Bailey internally like by giving Bellows or Holmstrom a full time spot.

It's a good risk for the third pair LD. Muzzin, when healthy, would help a lot in the Islanders problem area, which is moving the puck up ice from the defensive zone.

Makes sense for both teams. Bailey played well with Tavares. Adds length to the top 9 and maybe even allows someone else to be moved for a younger Muzzin. For the Islanders, if he’s healthy, Jake is the better fit for what that team needs in the short term. Big IF though, so understandable if Lou puts Dubas on hold.
