I really hope Weal is our 3rd line center. Kid deserves it and having met him and his family i been rooting for him since he was drafted. I was not happy with Sutters comments today about Weal.

It's a young mans game, gotta give the kids a shot. I get it when Sutter talks about 3C production and "box checking", but it's not like it's going to be difficult to replace Stoll and Richards' recent production. Both of those guys were terrible.

I think both Shore and Weal can be an asset to the team this year, they just need the opportunity.

I touched on Sutter's comments on Shore and Weal in the story.

Always take what Sutter says, especially about young players, with a grain of salt. A VERY LARGE grain. Maybe several very large grains...

Lol thanks ! Sure hope your right !

I think the kid can flat out play just needs some more confidence, he won't be denied and we can have our very own Tyler Johnson

The audition for the part will play on well into the season. Also, DS doesn't really think one is better than the other if he puts one player in one role and the other in the other role. Shore worked well with Clifford and Nolan in that role, and I really don't see him messing with it. Also, it then works, well for Shore and Clifford kill penalties. Weal will not be PK. He might get some PP, but he will earn that as well. Also, I think Shore will be penciled in. Weal will be competing with Lewis for 3C. I think indirectly he might be competing with Mersch, because if Mersch looks good, DS might move Lewis off the W and back to C just to get Mersch. It's all about plugging roles, of if you like boxes. Good article.

Well, practically anything is going to be an upgrade over Stoll's performance last season. I'm looking forward to more production and fewer boneheaded penalties out of the 3C spot this season.

good luck to weal. he's worked hard (drafted 2010) at improving and proving himself, which he did, in spades, the last 2 years of his AHL contract. shore was given a chance before him (drafted 2011) last year; andreoff wasn't cut last year and weal was. toffolii and pearson both earned spots up there before weal and they proved their worth, obviously. it's time to give weal his shot on the team imo. and then later this year maybe bring up mersch.

Thanks, Gann!

DS on Weal:

""I think as it’s gone along, there’s been times where he’s shown he can be productive, and times where he’s shown he can’t,†said Sutter.""

Hm...kind of like...Kopitar? Like the 16 goals he scored last year?
Or the ZERO PPG goals in 2012-13? Nice production for a first line center.

I mean, his comments were noncommittal about pretty much all those players, I'd take the fact that he mentioned he can be productive but apparently still has lots to learn as a compliment, though the obvious worry reading between the lines little bit is matchups with other teams.

But I agree with all the others about his character and tenacity, and DL's comments about "he won't be denied" back at the end of the AHL playoffs were revealing.

I've interviewed many, many NHL coaches over the years, including all the big names. Few try to motivate their players or send messages to them as Darryl Sutter does. He's very old school in that regard. He'll never let on about his intentions, but he can't hide them from us (local media who regularly cover the Kings), either. It's something all coaches do, but i don't remember another who did it as much, or as consistently, as Darryl Sutter does.

The most blatant (and ridiculous) of them all, at least in my career, was Marc Crawford, who went into every media scrum with his own agenda, and would answer media questions with whatever he wanted to talk about, even if his answer had absolutely nothing to do with your question. It was often so bad that he totally crossed the line of professionalism, common courtesy and respect...another reason he's not an NHL head coach anymore...that kind of stuff extends to coaching.

I think Sutter is saying that the production has to be higher. These young guys can't just replace Stoll and Richards on the third line. They have to produce more. He's suggesting that the production there could have been the difference between making the playoffs and not.

I met him once and he was a cool guy to conversate with, but add your anecdote to that Paul Stewart (?) article about how he interacted with refs too and the guy seemed like an egomaniacal ***** when it came to the game. If you're not getting results either that won't sit well with the bosses OR the other parties like media, players, etc...

Right, it was almost a dean lombardi 'boxes' reference, that the production that's supposed to be coming from the 3C isn't, and so forth.
