Hey jacket fans. I'm looking for some insight on Korpisalo. His NHL debut seemed very promising but this year his AHL numbers are pretty weak. Do you guys have some insight on what's going on? How was he in pre-season and where are you projecting his future?

After Joonas Korpisalo NHL debut last season, he went back to the AHL Lake Erie (re-named Cleveland) Monsters. He carried his solid NHL start to the AHL playng very well. As the playoffs began, he won his first six games (4-0 sweep in the first round and 2-0 lead in the second round). He had a lead in Game 3 of the next series and let the game slip away. They lost the next game, so the series was tied at 2 and he was pulled in favor of Anton Forsberg.

The only thing Anton Forsberg then did was stand on his head, pitch a couple shutouts and go 9-0 on the way to a Calder Cup Championship. Korpisalo never got a minute the rest of the way. Forsberg never left a crack in the door of opportunity. The season ended with the CBJ thinking they have two potential starting NHL goalies in development.

Training Camp opened with many people thinking Curtis McEhelany would spend the second of his 2-year $800,000 contract in Cleveland and one of the kids would come up. C-Mac stepped up in camp. Forsberg played just okay and Korpisalo got hurt. C-Mac is Bob's back up and the two kids are back in Cleveland for further development.

You are correct that Korpisalo showed flashes of potential. But he got hurt. Korpi was with the big club on the 4-game western road swing during the 3rd week of the season. He was still on IR but was practicing with the team. When they got back about 10 days ago (and hung a shiner on Montreal) he was activated and sent to Cleveland.

He should get the opportunity to play in the AHL. He might get the occasional call up depending upon injuries to C-Mac and Bob (sounds like a morning drive time radio show - C-Mac and Bob).

The team, like they are doing with Sonny Milano, Oliver Bjorkstrand, and did with Josh Anderson are letting them get "over-ripe" in the minors. C-Mac has 0% chance of getting a contract extension for next year. In fact, if one of the kids are ready, I could see C-Mac moved at the trade deadline, regardless of the CBJ playoff position and hopes. (my opinion only - nothing to base that on)

All that has been talked about, and the most over used word in Columbus for 16 years is Potential. We sometimes refer to "the P word". This administration is now, with a nod to the Detroit Red Wing model, refusing to bring kids up until they can handle the mental and physical aspects, both on and off the ice, and the positional responsibilities on the ice.

For the near future, Alexander Wennberg will be the last player that will be permitted to wear Union Blue while still finding his way.

Hope that helps.

Wow thanks for that wonderfully in depth reply. And don't get me started on Wennberg lol (missed him by two picks in keeper starting in 3rd round).

So is korpisalo still a viable option moving forward? Or would drafting Forsberg have been a better idea?

Current goalies are Holtby, Fleury, varlamov, kuemper, korpisalo and Gudlevskis. The latter two drafted this year for good reason the way fleury and varlamov are playing.

I don't participate in fantasy hockey. You don't want me near your team - I'm better at stuff like above.

I'll leave that to somebody else here in the forum.

It's a complete toss up between Korpisalo and Forsberg (and potentially Merzlikins).

Forsberg has had the superior AHL numbers. Korpisalo has had the superior NHL numbers. Projecting goalies is almost impossible.

That said, Korpisalo has both the ability and mental approach necessary in order to succeed in the NHL. He needs to work on his positioning. When he goes down, he tends to flounder and relies a lot on his athleticism in order to recover.

However, he is very tough mentally. According to interviews with the coaches last season, Korpisalo doesn't get rattled easily. He has shown an ability to rebound well from a bad loss or bad goal.

I don't think the question is "why are Korpisalo's AHL numbers not great?" I think it's "why aren't Forsberg's NHL numbers better?" For Korpisalo, I think it's that he's rusty and just coming back from injury.

I'm appreciating all the feedback. What I saw to make me draft him was a varlamov feeling. Just needs to put it together consistently I'm hoping

Korpi is an athletic goaltender. This makes him a little more difficult to project to the NHL level, at least full-time. He is not mentally weak, but, as Crede said, he relies on his athleticism too much at times and gets out of control.

Too hard to predict at this point what happens with the three prospects in net in the Jackets' system.
