What looked like a shiny new toy at first to go ALL-IN on a UFA signing, seems to losing its luster over time and his contact is not aging well in a stagnant Salary Cap market.

It's kind of funny to think about the Tavares signing as a shiny new toy because over the years he doesn't really provide a lot of flashy entertainment value on the ice or a ton of relatable personality off of it even when things are going well.

Ya but Dubas didn’t know that.

Only good thing with Matthews being suspended is we will get a nice look to see if JT is indeed cooked. If he can't look like a star with Marner and Bunting nobody will get him going and he should be put on Matthews and Marner's wing instead of being expected to drive his own line.

That was always more likely than not with an expensive ufa and we shouldn’t really have expected otherwise.

I’ve said it before but the real problem is they’ve blown every playoff opportunity since he arrived starting with the Bruins in 2019 when they held the initiative in that series until everything unraveled in game 6. Those were the years to make a run, in the first half of JT’s contract. That’s passed now.

His production is still ok points wise for year 4, but he’s become frustratingly streaky.

As much as I still have respect for JT as a player, I'm coming around to that it's just not working out. There were a lot of dreams and a lot of hopes, but they just haven't materialized. JT has been very, very streaky the last three years and while he has his hot streaks where he dominates, it's not what we were all hoping for.

As far as having JT on the team, I'm still pretty pleased to have the actual hockey player John Tavares at 2c. I'm sure you're all sweating the contract and I am too, but even with JT's decline we're still elite up the middle and that's a good thing. Not sure how we move forward, hard to see him waiving that NTC and we don't just chuck a PPG centre in the dumpster, but if it's not working it's not working.

EDIT: Two points in the first period just hours after I wrote this. Attaboy JT, unleash the beast!

no difference in his play tonight with Marner , a nothing 2nd assist and a puck that glanced off his foot for a goal

he needs to step it up for the playoffs

I'm sure a big part of it is playing with Marner, but he really did step up in a big way. Hopefully he can do it again on Thursday

He stepped up pretty big early in the game. Marner's pacing, east west movement and area passes were a nice mix of puck carrying and delaying for Tavares to catch up and set up in position in a way that Nylander and Kerfoot do not. Kind of unlocked a non grinding aspect of Tavares' game. Tavares also deserves some credit for recognizing the moment and taking more ownership of the situation at 1C as he seemed more dialed in than in your typical February type game.

Sorry but didn't see Marner in on JTs goal. Tavares got his 2 points in under 16:00 TOI so good on him. Tonight was the secondary scoring and Kallgren. Nice to see them but they can't be relied on much. I'm not complaining but good to see the weird stuff stop.

I always thought this was the case too. They signed him for the first ~4 years of that contract on the hope that he and the young stars could put it together.

I still think he is better than he has been the past month or so, but it is possible his best years are behind him.

You don’t know hockey and likely have never played. It’s a bad take.
naw , i just don't ram my head in the sand and base my opinion of how someone played by the name on the back of the jersey

but do tell , what did you see Johnny do tonight that was so different and to clarify i'm asking what Johnny did not what his linemates were doing to allow Johnny to hang around the net

but maybe we just have different expectations and you believe JT being a much slower but more skilled version of Hyman is worth 11m unlike myself

LOL.

He made things happen out there, as he always does. Pacing for 28 goals and 79 points as he always does. Works HARD, as he always does. If it was back in the early 2000's, we'd all be bragging about Sundin and his 28G/79P. It's only because Tavares is overshadowed by Matthews & Marner, that entitled little Leaffan Brats want 'more' out of Tavares. In fact, he's doing great.

I'm not a JT fan at all, but I think that you're bang on. Marner is not as fast as Willy and does plat a lot more east/west. JT likes to grind and make cute little plays in tight, which plays a lot better with Marner as opposed to Willy. That being said, needing to unlock our 11 million dollar captain by playing him with another 11 million dollar play is asinine, and I don't want to break up Matthews and Marner, as that line has carried us for a solid month now. JT still limits us in a lot of ways I feel like.
