I think Robertson has earned another chance to play beside JT and Willy

Leafs need to make a number of roster changes to continue the championship climb and I think Tavares just gets in the way of things. The value is just not there game to game.

He needs someone like Marner or Nylander to play with, but as much as they make him effective, he makes them less so.

I'm not sure the tradeoff is worth it.
 
Only way to find out whether he has regressed or not is to put him with Marner. If he continues to struggle then there is a real problem otherwise there just might be chemistry issue with Nylander. But maybe the organization might be too scared to find out and for the hockey world to see cause that is essentially what they are betting on for success.

Kind of curious to see what Kyle Okposo would look like with Tavares again to be honest. Get him someone to play slow and ugly with, grind, crash around and cycle. Okposo has one year left at $6 million. Maybe we could do a Craig Anderson and Okposo at 50% retained for Mrazek or something.
 
Worst leafs captain in modern era history. This guy was given everything and came in with elite talent already on the team. Absolute Mort and robot personality, just like his play. Skates like he’s on cement.

Phaneuf was thrown into the wolves and never really had a chance with “trade for players” rebuild. At least he threw a hit every now and then.

After the leafs lose in the 1st round again, Tavares should be stripped of the C and given to Matthews.

McDavid was suspended for 2 games for a dirty hit to the head, surely you have no issue with him being captain? Yikes.

Best player on the team should get the C.

I disagree, I think the guy who's the leader isnt always the best player. I don't think of either as a leader tbh.

Father time is hitting Muzzy and JT 1 season ahead of schedule .. time for JT to LW for a few games before playoffs so he can learn some wall basics .. but team won't do right thing in best interests of team especially if JT thinks he is not ready to make switch yet

Agreed. He uses his legs and arms independently. Anytime he wants to stick handle or reach for a puck he stops moving his feet. Can't have a guy like that playing center.

We need a new gm that will force him out. He has zero passion left for the game and just goes through the motions. Hes the second biggest issue on this team besides goaltending. I hope the organization does what they can in the offseason to move him.

My first reaction to getting Tavares was it was rushing the rebuild.

Tavares had a great year and pumped Marner’s AAV to the moon.

We never had the time / cap flexibility to get a solid D core.

Dubas knew he’d have to sign the RFAs to good value deals with JT on the books and when he couldn’t ….. he should have bridged or traded them.
 
As he continues to slow down, the coaching staff needs to consider moving him to left wing. He still has the tools to be effective in that role.

John Tavares kind of reminds me of Dion Phaneuf. High profile Hockey Canada star imported to Toronto and kind of given the royal off ice treatment as this franchise pillar, captaincy, huge star contract etc. But the frustrating thing is all the off ice glitz doesn’t match the on ice reality in terms of star impact shift to shift. There was always such a distortion about what kind of defenseman Phaneuf was. First pairing star on a bad team, overrated top 4 guy? Same distortion seems to be with Tavares evaluations. Is he a star center, a low end number one center? A second line center with great stats? Nobody seems to be able to put their finger on it. And he just looks so much less impactful when he’s playing behind our true star center Matthews.

Oh wow, JD Bunkis made the same observation today. We are on the same frequency.

The change in tone from the first page of this thread to last is rough.

Tavares will be in Toronto until he at least hits 500 goals/1000 points
 
I know it probably has never happened, but is it possible for a player to actually agree with a team to a mutual termination of a contract & then re-sign with that same team under a different contract? I think his actual salary is 7.95 mil for the remaining 3 years of his contract starting next year. I'm guessing CBA has some preventative measures, but was curious.

Idea would be to bring his cap hit to 7.95 mil instead of 11 mil.
