The Players' Tribune: John Scott on his ASG selection

I, for one, think you are all crazy. Scott is not an All Star player and will never be an All Star player. To have him in the lineup with Ovechkin et al further adds to the obscenity that this dog and pony show has become. I would support Bettman had he made an executive decision to bar Scott from the game. Scott did nothing to be there: doesn't have the talent or didn't work enough to propel himself to an All Star level. I hope Bettman does away with that stupid fan vote next year.

People who voted him in are the same people to write in "Mickey Mouse" and "Darth Vader" in presidential elections.

Using terms like "obscenity" to describe an All-Star game is a laugh and a half. Where do you draw the line with this logic? Zemgus Girgensons shouldn't have been an All-Star last year but the league had no business disqualifying him.

What is the All-Star game than nothing more than a popularity contest? Did all the players that the Habs fans voted in deserve to go the year it was in Montreal? Everyone including the NHL is taking this game way too seriously like we are trying to put John Scott in a Stanley Cup Final game or something. It's a fluff game for the fans that doesn't really matter when it comes down to it. Let the man go and have his fun. You don't completely mess with a man's family for what amounts to nothing. By the way, I would rather watch someone who actually wants to be there than the "superstars" that have to make excuses not to be.
 
So they manipulate a trade, uproot the guy and his family, ask him if his kids would be proud, ignore a marketing opportunity because it goes against their own ideas of how to market the event, all in the name of protecting the integrity of the event?

An event that in the past has seen players fake injury to not attend, be suspended for not attending, Superman props, cowboys hats, two sticks.

What is wrong with the NHL and it's definition of integrity?

If they want integrity, how about they just let the players vote for whoever they want to, if someone does not want to attend take him off the ballet. Rework the whole idea of the game towards the best judges of who is an All Star is based on direct peer review instead of whomever the NHL feels like jamming down the fans throats.

Add some interest back into the game, if the players think a players should be there regardless of his stats or marketability, let it be. Add in some drama, some new unique story lines. That is stuff that the fans would tune in for.

Dear NHL, not enough people liked your version of the All Star Game, use this as a jumping off point instead of reverting back to your version, which is bland no matter how many gimmicks you put into it. Having Pierre MCGuire ask Kane or Crosby for the umpteenth time how much fun they are having during All Star weekend is boring and makes me want to turn off the TV.
 
Why is it that before an all star game people talk about the "sanctity" of the game and who deserves to be there, and then after the game people complain that the game sucks and should be gotten rid of? This thinking that this game is somehow important is laughable, and hypocritical. It's nothing more than an exhibition which most players don't want to go to at all. I'm not talking about just hockey either, every sport has stories of players who bow out of the game and make excuses to not go.

That was a great article last night. Gained a lot more respect for the guy because he knows exactly what his role is and his teammates respect him because of that. I hate to think what NBC will do with this as they are shills for the NHL, but I hope he goes out there, has fun, maybe scores a goal, and it's a memorable weekend.

It's not just that he was traded, it was why he was traded. This was not two teams making moves to improve their team. This was trading someone to bury him in the AHL so he wouldn't "embarrass" the league because he refused to do what they wanted.

As I said before, I'm not a fan of John Scott the player but I will be rooting for John Scott the man. He did not deserve to be treated this way regardless of how you feel about his play on the ice.

What's obscene is this post and the comparison of the NHL All-Star game to a Presidential Election.

I do agree that the fan voting system is stupid and should be done away with (or at least more controlled), but your assertion is just as ridiculous as the votes for John Scott, especially when a number of players selected to participate in the All-Star game wish to voluntarily bow out.
 
What a disgrace. John Scott deserves to hold his head high - good on him for telling his side. I'd be proud to have him on any team I played for. Makes me sick to see a piece of **** like Patty Kane get treated like a god, while a guy like John gets completely **** on by the league. Sickening.

The NHL is seriously losing site of what made this game great for so long - it wasn't pointless go-pro videos made to show off 'sick dangles'. It wasn't 3 on 3 shinny or playing for ties. It was seeing guys put it all on the line every night. THIS is why fans voted for a guy like John. He represents honesty, integrity, accountability and hard work. The antitheses of the $12m prima donna's in the league. And John handled it all with humor and grace.

I won't be watching the all star game. You lost me NHL. I will buy an unlicensed John Scott t-shirt though.
 
The fan vote is flawed anyway. Almost like last year when Mike Moustakas was leading Donaldson for majority of the vote due to fan voting.

Luckily fans voted the rightful and deserving player in after a while.

Do I think the game would be better with OEL or Max Domi representing the Coyotes? Yes, I do. However, the guy got the most votes. Fair and square. Whether you think he's deserving or not is the beautiful thing about democracy and voting.
 
Just more evidence the NHL has to abolish the current All Star format and reinvent the game.

I would like to see them combine the prospects game with the All Star team(s). Have the top junior players compete in a skill competition against NHL All Stars then have the prospects game.

Scrap the league wide voting thing. Build up local team interest by having each team do a skills competition to sort who goes to the All Star game.

Really great read.

While I still believe that John Scott has no business whatsoever being in Nashville this weekend, this article was certainly very insightful and eye opening.

Don't judge a book by it's cover - that's the lesson I re-learned by reading this. I definitely have a new found respect for John Scott.
 
We as people here are not the rich 1% of the world. We are the common man (or teens). It's easy to see why "we" root for John Scott, and against the big bad NHL and other stars ("damn these rich people getting everything for free at the ASG!"). It's easy for us to band together and moan at NHL decisions, who clearly is against our humble-man John Scott.

Scott was dragged into this, by immature voters. Not because the NHL left a ballot wide open. "WE" PICKED HIM. "WE" singled HIM out, for nefarious reasons. And now he's coping the best he can, making the best of the situation the only way he knows how. Guilt or not, this deflection of blame toward the NHL (no they didn't handle it great either)... stay classy guys, especially those who voted for him.

The guy is a goon who should not be anywhere near the NHL on his abilities and he has kept more deserving players out of the league as a result. His presence has also made a mockery of the all star game and fan voting.

You dont really think the league would be this stupidly transparent do you? Though it would explain Bergevin not firing the coach use ices and intentionally weak first and second line. Players don't tank but for management its quite easy. Ok i am putting my tin foil hat away now.

If the players help him get the mvp it will be amazing. That would be movie quality script material right there. I think if they ever make a Sequel to goon, this premise would be amazing and endless comedy gold.

He appeared as an available option on the fan vote option. In there were specific players the NHL didn't want there then it should not have been possible to vote for those players.

the fan voting was a mockery but it turned into a great underdog story. Think of the fan votes as those mean girls in highschool that set up their friend with a horrible ugly date as a cruel joke. As the night goes on and the more you know about the person suddenly you start to appreciate the human being and things don't go as planned for the goofs that set it up. The joke turns into a inspirational story.
