I think it makes the most sense for Utah to ice the defense they thought they were going to have. Robert Bortuzzo should be a deep depth guy. Lamoureux can go play #1 minutes in Tucson. Maatta moves back to his natural side.

There will be plenty of chances for Kesselring even in a healthy line, I think people put too much emphasis on seeing “well he’d be their #3 RHD therefore he won’t get much use”. First that’s not even a guarantee. Second, depending on night or situation, he could easily still get more even strength time than either Durzi or Marino even if all are healthy. Durzi is gonna get more PP time. Marino is gonna get more PK time. It’s actually a nice blend of projected roles between the three.

Sergachev-Marino
Cole-Durzi
Maatta-Kesselring
Valimaki

They're currently trotting out Oli Maataa and Robert Bortuzzo every night, as well as old ass Ian Cole on the left side.

They'll put Marino and Durzi back into the lineup lmao.

Marino, Durzi, Kesselring, Sergachev top 4

And Lamoureux - who was doing well as a rookie - could still be in the lineup as well.

Also NHL teams should aspire to have more than 4 good dmen lmao.

You shouldn't be shipping them out unless you're
A) selling and tearing things down
B) able to replace them at a surplus value (eg Pesce wanting to come to NJD and take a discount)
C) have like 8 quality dmen and at least 5 top 4 options
D) in absolute cap hell

None of those things apply to Utah.

Outside of Marino Utah has 4 locked in dmen. Kesselring, Durzi, Sergachev, and Mavrik.

Valamaki isn't a long term fix, and they don't have any other big prospects there.

Trade marino and you are instantly looking to find a new marino

Simashev. Was selected #6 two years ago. Also have Szuber and Duda who they are high on.

I know he's been injured all season and his value must be lackluster right now. But once both Marino and Durzi are healthy, with the emergence of Kesselring, would it make sense to explore a trade market for Marino?
I doubt Marino is going anywhere at the moment.

Ahhh yes thank you, when I was checking I didn't look at the reserve list and didn't have simashev in mind

I still wish the stars had aligned and Marino, Nick Bonino and both Folignos ended up on the same roster at some point. Would have made for some epic play by play calls... :sarcasm:

I think for this season at least, Utah would rather boost the depth of the pairings over trading someone they just got. The emergence of Kesselring means you could put Marino on the 3rd pairing to start and shelter his minutes a bit.

We really shouldn't be moving out any D that aren't older with an expiring deal, or their name starts with Vali.

I'd love to add a top 4 LD, 2 way puck mover, higher end defensively, good skater. That and a 2 way center who's good for ~60 points a season. Using Marino for either of those just slides the problem to top 4 RD, and they're tough to come by.

What about Kesselring? I mean, one of Marino and Kesselring will probably play on the third pair?

It's the same thing as Marino at this point. Until John gets some games played and we see how he looks, I would leave the right side alone.

I mean, if someone makes an offer that can't be refused, I hope BA takes it. Neither are untouchable by any stretch, I do however think we should tread slowly on making a decision for who stays, and who goes.

These are all my own opinions though, who knows what BA winds up doing.
